loved mobile wifi

We just got back from 2 weeks in Spain and 4 of us shared Skyroam, the mobile wifi.

It was perfect to share and allowed us to be connected wherever we were. When we were at apartments/hotels with wifi, we could access that, but if we were wandering around, we had connectivity on the go.

For making phone calls, we used WhatsApp. I think we only had to make one dialed call.

Highly recommend! The cost is $10/day if you rent the device and $8/day if you purchase it for $100. Split among two couples, it was quite the deal.

We did love it though. I didn't have to mess around finding a SIM card that worked in a certain country, as the wifi worked everywhere. It had secure log in and unlimited data. It was definitely cheaper than paying for the $10/day with ATT and still having to have limited data and charges for phone calls.

And it worked for all 4 people, so we didn't have to get something for each device. It connected up to 5 devices at one time.

Thanks so much for posting this information. I appreciate hearing about options other than dealing with special phones, different SIM cards or special plans you have to buy.

While some may not see the value in this type of product, there are some who do. So critical posts do not really make a helpful contribution.

EDIT: looks like two posts have been removed

Sounds like this would be good for:

  • Larger groups-subject to the five simultaneous logon limit.
  • Backing up many photos and large files to cloud services
  • Convience. No need to get local SIM card.

Cons:

  • Relatively expensive
  • Another thing to carry, but it doubles as a backup charger
  • You must be in range of the device.

The last one may be important if you get separated from your travel companions. You may need an alternative method to contact each other. So that’s cellular or go searching for a WiFi hotspot.

I do find constructive criticism to be useful. Keyword is constructive. Based on posts like Andrew’s I’ve determined that for my situation a local SIM card is the way to go. Takes about an hour of my time but I save about $100 or more.

OP thank you for sharing your experience.

Andrew, how hard was setting up your Dutch Vodafone account.? The site seems to be all in Dutch.

I appreciate the feedback. My sister did purchase it so it was only $8/day split amongst two couples. That certainly seemed much cheaper than each of us purchasing a SIM card or using the AT&T plan for $10/day per device.

We didn't think that about $70 was too much too pay for 2 weeks of unlimited connectivity wherever we went.

However, I will certainly check out some of the other options the next time we travel.

$70 per couple is OK, but $15 per couple ($30 for one SIM including data) would have been cheaper and required you to carry one fewer device. A phone with hotspot turned on is the same thing as a mobile WiFi device.

My husband and I just returned from a trip to northern Italy and Switzerland. I got so tired of trying to connect to the local hotel wifi when my Iphone would never connect unless I was in a certain place in their lobby.....RIDICULOUS. I came home determined to change this scenario in the future! I heard from a family member that he rented a mobile device off the internet and it was ready and waiting for him at his first hotel on his trip. He turned it in to the hotel on the last day of the trip and it was picked up there after he was through using it. It would have made our trip communication so much easier as a couple of times I had to contact our tour leader to see where a purchased tour would be meeting. Had to be in the hotel lobby to get any response back!
Thanks for your info!

Jane, The other nice thing about the mobile wifi was that it shipped to our home in the US so we had it before we traveled. We didn't have to spend time finding a kiosk or hoping it would arrive where we were staying.

Jane, I have been in the same camp too. I find that in about 15% of the hotels that I have stayed in the WiFi is unusable. It varies from login issues to bandwidth (too little) to users streaming video and tying up capacity. That’s why I have a backup. In my case a SIM card but Rizell has shared with us another option.

We were in Paris, Brussels and London last year, and our AT&T international plan did not work for data for us. We could call and text, but data did not work.

I spent an hour on the phone with them, and another hour in twitter DMs and never got a satisfactory resolution.

I'm very interested in renting one of these as a backup for our next trip.
