iPhone charger cord

My iPhone just stopped charging this evening. I arrived in Paris this morning and need to buy another one as I will be here for three weeks. Has anyone run into this problem? Where did you go to get a replacement while in Paris?

Are you asking about replacing the phone or the charger cord? Do you know whether the problem is the phone or the cord? If its the charger cord, you can find them just about everywhere. I would start with your hotel.

On our last trip we had a couple cords that seemed to go bad, but also had outlet adapters that just didn't seem to work at some places. I'm assuming you tried different cords/adapters, etc.? Do you get a message on your phone? A weird thing was happening in Italy where my phone would stop charging and say the connector was damp. It wasn't and I havn't had the problem since.

Assuming you want an official Apple product, there are several Apple stores in Paris, one in Marche Saint-Germain. Google to find the store nearest you.

First, ask your hotel. They may have extras they could loan you while you shop. Look for a FNAC (electronics store) or a Monoprix (like a Target). Grocery stores (like Carrefour) might also have them. I’ve seen them in souvenir shops also.

STOP.

Don't ask your hotel, don't go hunting for an Apple store or a "replacement" - at least not yet. The first thing you need to do is get clarity on exactly what you really need. That is not (at all) clear from anything above.

What are you looking to replace? Your cable, your charger (aka "wall wart"), your phone, or something else?

You need to do a little investigating to determine what (if anything) needs to be replaced. It could be the cable or it could be the charger. It's probably not the "phone" or some part of the phone (ie the battery).

You may not be aware of it, but iPhones commonly stop charging because of (believe it or not) pocket lint. Yes, really. Sounds crazy, but carrying an iPhone in your pocket all the time frequently results in a build-up of lint in the charging port, which causes charging to fail (the lint prevents a good, solid connection betwee the cable and the port). This actually happened to my phone. All it takes is cleaning the cruft out, which is easy. Not kidding - here 's what Apple says: How to clean your iPhone charging port? and If your iPhone or iPod touch won't charge.

So before you start throwing money and precious vacation time at replacing things, figure out what the actual problem is. Try a different cable, try a different charging block. Try YOUR cable and charging block on another phone. Locate the component that isn't working (if there is one) - and do check for pocket lint!

Best answer: David in Seattle.

On the odd chance that the connector on your phone is too damaged, most any new phone will work with a wireless charger. Those are maybe $20-25 in a U.S. discount store. Not hard to find. But be sure to note which sort of power connector they have. They probably won't accept Apple cords. If need be, you can buy the correct mini-usb cord at the same store for $10 or so.

All the responses provided some help. In the interest of the forum and so people feel comfortable responding and know their response is valued, we probably want to avoid critiquing responses. I see nothing wrong with saying, "I agree with David", which I do, but no need to feel like its a competition. My opinion.

There are several possibilities, but it may be as simple as a cable. I'd go to a phone store or repair shop in hopes of finding a decent-quality cable rather than grabbing something off the rack,in a tourist shop. Google for cell phone repair shops. I've had some cables that stopped working rather quickly, though damage to the charging port may have been a factor.

Two years ago I was forced to resort to a wireless charger for two months. I had to use that thing every day while sightseeing, because I take a lot of photos. That was a miserable experience, but for a short trip, or for recharging the phone in the hotel room at night, it would have been manageable.
