iPhone/Apple Wallet new travel feature - digital Passport

UPDATE: just a reminder that this is now implemented with iOS 26, and you can upload your passport to Apple Wallet.

Here is a link to Apple's page showing directions on how to add the passport. As I stated below in the original post, you cannot use it for international travel. But I plan on using it in the US because it's always a headache to get out my real passport or real driver's license for domestic travel. So at least it's one step I can avoid (as soon as I receive my new passport, which I just applied for online.)

Reminder: You can also use it to get a digital copy of your driver's license, but only if you live in a state that allows it; currently Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia.

.

Starting this fall with IOS26 (new numbering system that reflects the year), Apple Wallet will allow iPhone users to add a U.S. passport that can be used in place of a physical passport for domestic travel at approved airports. Note that this cannot be used for international travel or border crossings at this time. It can be stored on an iPhone‌ or Apple Watch, and can be used at select TSA checkpoints throughout the United States. It is Real ID compliant, so a passport can be presented instead of a Real ID when traveling.

There will also be changes to digital boarding passes.

In Apple Wallet, a refreshed boarding pass experience delivers rich, relevant information straight to users’ fingertips with Live Activities that offer real-time updates about their flights. For added convenience, users can also share their flight’s Live Activities so friends and family can stay up to date on their journeys.

Refreshed boarding passes also allow users to conveniently access Maps to navigate airports and explore local recommendations, all in one place from their pass; quickly use Find My to track important items and report lost baggage; view key services on an airline’s app, such as seat upgrades and standby lists; and more. Refreshed boarding passes will be available starting with Air Canada, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, Jetstar, Lufthansa Group, Qantas, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and Virgin Australia.

For the Android folks out there, last December, G00 gle announced that G 0 0Gle pay would store U.S. passports, but they are only good domestically at the TSA of a bit over 24 major U.S. airports. And useable as I.D. in a few states. So, that seems too risky at this time. I'd think that an "Enhanced Driver's License" might be more likely to work than an app on a phone (today).

But it's great to see what Apple is doing. At present, I'd see the cellphone passport as a much better backup than the photocopies my wife and I carry.

Just a comment regarding an experience I had with Google wallet. I was flying KLM home from Amsterdam 2 weeks ago and Google Wallet automatically updated gate changes on my tickets, but the KLM app didn't, nor did it send me any push notifications of the change. I was impressed that Google was that intuitive, but KLM wasn't. I did confirm that notifications were turned on for the KLM app.

United updates departure time and gate info in their app along with IOS wallet and sends notifications. Should work for Google wallet and apps. I have iPhone in airplane mode until landing and notifications and text messages start flowing

So does Delta. And Apple Wallet. But this isn’t about just updating the boarding pass. The new interactive boarding pass will do a lot more,

I do like the convenience of having boarding pass in my Apple Wallet, but I always print out a boarding pass (or train ticket etc.) as a backup. If you were to lose your phone or the battery runs out of charge suddenly (faulty battery, software bug ...); the paper copy would be a lifesaver.

I am curious, how is this digital passport different and/or better than the photo of my passport that I keep in a locked note on my iphone?

CD in DC, because a photo of a passport stored on your phone will not get you through security. A digital passport—on domestic flights for now—will. There is a big difference between the two.

The only thing a photo of your passport is good for is to show that you have a passport if you lose it, or if you want to show it to a hotel for identification. And even then, some hotels may not accept it.

Or here's a better definitiopn:

A digital passport photo is a digital image file of a photo that meets specific government criteria, used for online applications or for the embedded chip in a physical e-Passport. A photo of a passport is simply a picture of the physical passport document itself, which can be a snapshot or a high-quality scan. The key difference is their purpose and function: a digital photo is an official image for identification, while a photo of a passport is a visual representation of the document.

Not necessarily. If I were to lose my phone or if the battery ran out of charge suddenly (which I can tell you has never happened to me in the history of digital check-ins), I would just walk over to the kiosk and print out another one. It's not like you can't access it from multiple places at the airport.
