iPhone 12 ‘lipstick’ size charger….any recommendations?

I’m leaving on the 9th for England and I’m really regretting the charger I bought last fall. It’s 7 1/2 ounces and pretty big. I recently downsized my travel purse so now it seems huge and heavy and I’m thinking maybe I’ll order one of the smaller (and half the weight) chargers from Amazon. Does anybody have any recommendations? Do those little guys hold up? Thanks for any thoughts…

I have used this powerbank for a few trips now. Relatively lightweight, compact, no need for cords. Have not had to fully charge my phone on it yet, but works great for topping off or getting out of the red for maps, etc. It's for an iPhone 15 with USB-C port, but this is the same thing for a 12 with a lightning port. Anker is a great brand.

I have the same one as TheOrdinaryRebecca - for my iPhone 12. It doesn’t fit in my purse quite as easily as my my small flat charger, but it has the advantage of not needing a cord (except when recharging it).

Size matters. If you reduce the weight by about half, you will reduce the charging capacity by about half. If you can live with the lesser capacity, buy something smaller.

Thanks for the response, y’all. I think I’m going to try the smaller one this trip. I normally need to ‘top up’ the charge by the end of the day after using maps and taking pictures. I don’t even mind carrying a cord but the size and weight of the one I got made me wonder what I was thinking.

You made a good point about Anker, Rebecca. Thanks. TTM if you care to share who makes the small flat charger you use, I’d love to know.

Lyndash, my flat one is an Energizer and I have had it a couple of years so I don’t see the exact same model. But it is very similar to this. I went to Best Buy and bought the lightest one they had.

I see Anker has a cheaper one very similar - I haven’t compared weight, etc.

Like you, for a full day of sightseeing, I keep mine in low power mode but will need to charge by the end of the day. I took both on my recent trip and which one I carried with me depended on what purse or pocket I was using that day.

I have the Anker power bank that TexasTravelmom linked to on Amazon. I’m using it right now in England. It can fully recharge an iPhone 14, which I have, or really any iPhone with a lightning connector, in about 20 minutes. And it will continue to recharge an iPhone at least 2 1/2 times before you have to charge the power bank.

The one caveat is that it is on the heavy side - about 12 ounces. I don’t mind it because it does such a great job of charging, and I really put my phone through the wringer with photos. I usually need to recharge it halfway through my day.

If you want to go even cheaper, they have it in these colors that are around $16, with the addition of a 24% off coupon. They’re the same as the black ones, but just different colors. https://a.co/d/cYGcyos

Also, one thing to keep in mind is that with a power bank, at least with this Anker power bank, you will need 2 chargers. The anchor requires a USB-C to USB-C connection to charge the power bank. To charge the phone, you need a USB-A to lightning connector.

I have the Anker power bank that TTM linked to...it's great and has multiple charge capacity, can handle charging an iPad, etc. BUT, it's heavy - according to the specs, 8.8 oz. It's "slim" but still about the size of a phone. The "lipstick" style that I mentioned above weighs 3.5 oz. and is about the size of, well, a lipstick (a chubby one lol). So it depends what you want/need. I sometimes take both, but really only carry the nano one in my day bag. I have the bigger power bank as a backup in the hotel room if the outlets are far away or difficult to get to, but it stays in my carry-on or backpack.

Thanks again for sharing your recommendations. I’m really aiming for lighter weight and smaller size. When I bought my new smaller purse I never gave a thought about phone charger (dumb) but I think I will try the smaller, lighter one Rebecca linked, to take out for the day and see how it goes. I think I will also take the heavier one I already own and leave it in the room even though I hate packing ‘just in case’ stuff. I can use it on the bus while I’m on the tour and in the airport.

I suggest looking at the power capacity of the charger. As a general rule, the more power, the more weight.

I used to think about getting more capacity as the primary thing, which led me to get power packs that could charge my phone several times over. I soon realized, however, that I did not really need that much juice on most trips because I just needed to "top up" my phone a bit after using it all day. I could fully recharge it later, back near an electrical outlet, once I turned in for the day. Consequently, a charger that had about the same capacity as the battery in my phone, would be more than enough.

I now carry ones with capacity around 4,000 or 5,000 mAh. Smaller and lighter in weight. Also, I agree on the recommendation for Anker power packs; Anker seems to be a reliable, affordable brand.
