Interesting Chrome Problem

I've run into an interesting problem using Google Chrome. While in Europe I used it frequently on both wifi and mobile data. I had trouble with it refusing to accept English as the default language, even after following all the steps Google provides to set English as one's only use language. But I'd get search results in Polish, Czech, German and Italian. Understandable, right? Except they didn't always correspond to our physical location.

Now we're back in the USA, and I've inactivated my European eSIM. But I can't get Chrome to quit giving me search results in German. I've even deleted the cache and all other data. Really odd. I've been forced to change browsers to Edge.

I guess I'd say make sure the chrome app has permission to know your location.

I've always used Firefox, no problems. And I trust Mozilla more than gogle or mcro$oft.

It does have that permission. That's not the problem, though I still don't know what the problem is. I have this problem with Chrome even on the Windows desktop version now. Really weird.

I spent the summer in Italy and countries to the north and east. About two-thirds of the way through the trip, I suddenly started seeing a lot of Dutch--about 1/3 of my search results were in that language. I haven't been to the Netherlands since the early 1980s, nor had I been Googling anything about the Netherlands. The problem ended not too long after I returned home. I imagine your problem will resolve itself soon, but I agree that it's really annoying.

"Interesting Chrome Problem" my age often leaves me lost. I thought you were having trouble with tarnish on a car bumper. I had a solution. Nevermind.

You might try uninstalling/reinstalling Chrome. I've had some odd things happen after an update and that seemed to solve the problem. I think somewhere in the settings is also a hard reset option - just back up your bookmarks before you do it.

Unfortunately, uninstalling Chrome is not possible on a Samsung Android tablet or phone. I wish I could.

My old Galaxy S10 came w Chrome, i can't un-install it. But I could install Firefox, no problems. Searches here are in English. But i do have Firefox set to use DuckDuckGo as my search engine (much more private than Go0g1e). Maybe thats the reason....

jphbucks - maybe it's an Android version issue, but on my Android phone (running version 14) in the Google Play store I have the option to uninstall (and update) Google Chrome. There's a pending update, perhaps it will reset itself if you force that through.

Has anyone installed Firefox on an Android tablet? I love my tablet for traveling, but have had too many problems with Chrome. It definitely does not seem to like Outlook, and I too end up with non-English default languages. I will say, the languages I end up with reflect some place we had visited recently. I think mine is still defaulting to French, and we were there last 2 years ago.

Re: tablet, I've installed Firefox on an old Google Nexus tablet, no problems. Just went to Google Play store.

I also have an Amazon Fire tablet. Works great for reading, but no Google Play store, just Amazon. But, I was able to download the latest Firefox as an .apk file using my laptop. I copied it to the Fire tablet, and was able to "sideload" the .apk. So now it runs fine on the Fire tablet.

Have you tried checking the language setting in Chrome?

Go up to the three dots in the top right corner. Scroll down to settings. Click on it. Then scroll down to "Languages." Click on that.

Make sure current language is set to English (United States) and preferred languages are only English and English (United States.)

Turn on Translation and make sure the language it translates into is English.

When you put the foreign sim in Chrome probably read that and changed the setting.

Chrome syncs so when something changes in one device it will change on all where you are logged into chrome.

I have a bunch of browsers on my Android phone and tablet. Got them all through the Google store. I have had no problems with them.

Since Amazon Fire's platform is based on Android, you can side download the Google Play store:

It's a little tricky but I did it.

Frank II, I've done everything you mention. Jane, I've tried Foxfire and other browsers; for whatever reasons, I much prefer Chrome to any other browser. Just like the look and feel.

Thanks, travelerguy, Frank II, and jphbucks for letting me know Firefox works with Android. It's what we use at home on our laptop, and we both prefer it, my husband especially.

Problem has been solved by changing to Yahoo as my default search engine, using Chrome as the browser. None of the "fixes" mentioned online worked.
