How do you remember interesting places you discover while traveling?

I've noticed something during many of my trips across Europe.

I'll pass through a small village, see an interesting monument, historic building, local landmark, or hear about a place that sounds fascinating.

I often think: "I should learn more about that later."

But by the end of the day I've forgotten the name or where exactly I saw it.

I'm curious how experienced travelers handle this.

Do you keep notes?
Save locations on a map?
Take photos as reminders?
Research everything in the evening?

Or have you found a better system?

I'd love to hear how others deal with discovering interesting places while traveling.

A good restaurant or shop, I save the location in Google Maps.

I do miss a feature Google Maps used to have, you could go back years and see where you might have wandered, places you stopped. People worried about privacy and things took that away. The basic feature is still there, but only retains a shorter period of time

I take photos. All the time. Of anything that sparks my interest. With a camera. Yes, im a troglodyte.

I keep a travel journal. An actual one made of paper and a binding. And it lives in my purse when travelling. With a pen clipped to it. So I can scribble something down at any time, then flesh it out later in the day when I'm relaxing. Because I'm a troglodyte. Its worked for the last 4 decades, so I dont feel a need to change it now.

Welcome to the forum, Stan.

I take photos and try to post with a label to FB that night.

I also start a Google document at the beginning of my trip to do my Trip Report for the forum and add things like this to that document to research later. Sometimes when I am at a site I will jot a note to myself in the document.

@CJean - laughing at your troglodyte ways! Just came back from Yellowstone with my 7-year-old great nephew. I started him with a small pocket-sized unlined notebook and mechanical pencil so I would not have to worry about sharpening on the go. He had a great time making lists of wildlife, geysers, and who knows what, hahaha. I'd miss him when we were walking and look back to see him writing something down.

Great question!

If it's something I really want to remind myself to do, I add it to my post-trip TODO list - each of my trips has one. If it's more that I want a memory, I take photos. I ALWAYS take a photo at the entrance to a place to remind myself where the following pictures were taken.

I take photos & include a name photo (like a sign) so I remember. I also make photo books when I return and I keep a journal. I'm not a very creative writer, but it helps me remember what I did that day, especially when combined with the photos.

Mostly I take notes and photos so I remember. As Paul mentioned, I save many places in Google Maps so I remember them, but I also take little notes while I'm stopping for coffee or whatever about things that I discovered during the day. I keep a travel journal, more of a blog now, and usually updated at the end of the day so I want to make sure I don't forget anything.

It's wonderful tto go back ten or even twenty years to a previous trip and think back on the things that you discovered back then.

Great question and some interesting ideas, thanks everyone!

I add a written note to my iPhone with a date, idea, whatever to look up later. It seems to work.

A forum friend showed me pictures of well-liked hotel rooms, WITH the room number. I've saved a few of them for future trips.

CWSocial - I like the idea of taking a picture before entering a destination, anyone else been confused by which painting is in which church??

Pam, what a lucky kid!!! My niece has a 'passport book' her kids share to add a stamp / picture sticker of each place they visit.

I take photos and make my photobook and write a trip report soon after returning home. If I’m interested in more information I usually look it up on my phone on the spot or in the evening. I will probably add some of the other good ideas suggested in the replies.

Notes in small (2" x 3") notebook, photos, and posting photos on Facebook.

I have a Samsung Galaxy phone. I've turned on "Location tags", so my photos are all identified. Shows the map and address of subject. This is invaluable when you take a lot of photos. I also carry a small notebook to jot down notes.

I try to take a picture of the sign of the building or statue, etc. before taking a picture of the subject.

It's nice to see everyone providing their earnest replies here, but this appears to be an AI generated post (confirmed with GPTZero) for engagement- likely there will be an advert coming up later for some type of service to help people keep notes etc on travels.
