We have Samsung Galaxy cell phones thru Consumer Cellular and looking for some advice if we want to be able to talk to each other on our phones if need be, call the US , use Goggle translate, Goggle maps, check email what is the best thing to do, buy a sim card in Greece ? We were told by Consumer cellular that its $.30 minute and 0.10 for text, very inexpensive, but don't even going online data fees thru the roof?
If we put the phones in airplane mode, you can't get text? How do you avoid the roaming fees?
How much per MB of data? That's what you need to ask CC. You can still use the your phones for free on WiFi - just keep the phones in airplane mode then enable WiFi.
If your phones are unlocked, you can definitely buy SIM cards in Greece. If you didn't buy them from CC, they should be unlocked. If you bought from CC, they will unlock them six months after purchase, as long as they are paid off. You won't have your US phone numbers while you have Greek SIM cards in them, though - you'll have Greek phone numbers. You can also contact each other through messaging apps like WhatsApp, Skype, Google Hangouts, etc.

Install Google Hangouts (and Hangouts Dialer) if you want to make free calls home to the US, even landlines, while on WiFi or if you buy a SIM card. Nice to be able to call your airline or bank or whatever and be on hold and not worry about paying 30 cents a minute!!!
Thanks Andrew, so if I put it on Airplane mode , I won't be able to receive a text?
Yes, that's right, actually: you have to enable data to receive regular texts. You can look at a free texting app like WhatsApp (which I haven't used, personally) - lets you receive texts using just WiFi. But, I would find out what they charge for roaming data anyway.
Thanks, I will..
