Google rejecting reviews

I filed a Google Maps review on each attraction and restaurant we visited in Europe recently and now Google is rejecting them! They are all innocuous and have good things to say about the places we went. Other people are reporting the same issue. Anybody know what’s up with this? I was planning to use my reviews as a sort of trip journal.

They rejected my reviews of a walking tour company in Berlin, a bathhouse in Budapest, the Budapest central market, and a restaurant in Budapest. The reason given in each instance is: “In this case, the specific policy involved is fake engagement. This policy doesn’t allow content or behavior that manipulates a place’s rating, doesn’t represent a genuine experience, or is posted in exchange for incentives.” None of this is true!

So how many reviews did you try to place in a short period of time? I have a feeling that’s the problem.

The fact that you had of you on every place, you went, probably raised some flags with them. Most people don’t do very many reviews so to do a lot of them may signal to the algorithm that you are potentially a commercial entity.

I have had this issue before and was able to raise it with support, but I don't exactly remember how. It got sorted and I was able to review again .

Sounds like they are suspicious that you are a "reviewer for hire" who is getting paid to write positive reviews. Try writing a negative review?

This happens every time I post a review on Google, which I do rarely anyway. I use the appeal function and the review is always eventually accepted.

Something in your reviews must have triggered their fake review policy. I've never had that issue but I've been reviewing for Google for years and am a Local Guide. A friend of mine had the same issue and appealed it to Google with success.

Did you post any photos or just the review? And is this your first post posting reviews? I think Google looks a bit harder at first time reviewers.

I tried to notify of such incorrect information; even pointing out which island it was at; and the response was that I couldn't prove it; and I shouldn't question the person's intent. I suggested someone look at the website of the actual place and anyone could easily see that I was speaking the truth. The truth didn't matter. Nothing changed. So I pretty much put zero weight in believing there is much truth is these kinds of reviews.

I'm sure that's true, but I can tell you that I have made dozens of suggestions about places I've found on Google with success. Usually it's either notifying them that a business has permanently closed, or that it's now open, or the hours are wrong or even the address. Of course, I always send some kind of evidence with the suggestion, and that is probably why nothing happened with yours, as there was no way to verify it.

I had this happen with a restaurant I reviewed in Dubrovnik. Strangely, it happened weeks after I posted the review. It was a positive review, and it DID represent my genuine experience. I have other reviews on Google, posted at various times, so I don't know why this one was flagged.
