Google Pay ending

I have received notice that Google Pay is being discontinued! I was in London in 2022 and used it for everything, buses, the tube, restaurants, everything. Do you know if Google Wallet will work the same way and I just need to migrate over? Or do I need to switch to Apple Pay?

He's right. The US Google Pay app is going away as of June. They are trying to focus on Google Wallet, which will remain. Of course, you can only download the Google Wallet app if you have an Android, so I'm not sure what that means. Cerastez, you will be able to switch everything over to Google Wallet with no problem (I'm assuming you have an Android phone).

ETA: Here's a link that explains it, Frank: https://support.google.com/googlepay/answer/14555219?hl=en#:~:text=While%20in%2Dstore%20and%20online,use%20starting%20June%204%2C%202024.

GooglePay or ApplePay is better because there’s no limit on the amount you can pay using contactless/tap payments.

For those of you who use Google Wallet DOES Google still run all transactions through your Google Account 1st, to scrape all the purchasing details before putting the purchase back into the CC processing queue ?

Or you could, you know, just use a credit card

Or you might, you know, not want to take a wallet/purse out with you.

In Google we trust... Google tracks everything.

I resisted as long as I could, but I can't help but use Google. Searches, calendar, emails, maps, payments all go through Google to some degree. Have you ever used dictation for your messages? If you search through Google security, you can full transcripts of what you have dictated into your phone. I just assume that Google has enough money to patch up any security issues and that the governments keep Google from abusing their position. In Google we trust.

PS Google must have replaced Pay much earlier in Canada. I could only load Wallet on my phone more than a year ago for my trip to Spain.

Yes. Really, all Google is doing is consolidating into Google Wallet. Functionality from the standpoint of paying is the same, just that Wallet offers more features, like storing loyalty card information and things like boarding passes.

It is possible that if you use Google Pay for some of it's minor features (expense tracking and categorization, money transfers to friends, etc.) that Google Wallet either does not do that, or at least in the same way.

"Google must have replaced Pay much earlier in Canada"

It's market-dependent. GooglePay is still operating in some other markets, including Singapore where I live, and India. Apparently no immediate plans to retire it in those markets.

I have a question.

I've had a Google Pay account for a few years, and seeing it was "ending", I downloaded the Android Google Wallet app, and added a card to it. In our small town, there are a few stores which take Google Pay and I've been able to use my phone at those stores using Google Wallet. When "Google Pay" ends here in the U.S., will those stores still accept the Google Wallet payment? Will their little logo be changed from "Pay" to "Wallet"?

As a precaution, I spent the last of the funds that I had in my Google Pay account, as I was afraid of losing that small amount.

The way I understand it, Google Wallet is just a way of storing your cards so you can pay using NFC (ie by tapping your phone for contactless in the same way you would your actual card). Anyone who accept contactless credit card payments will also accept NFC phone payment including cards stored on Google Wallet. You won't see any Google specific signage. The payment comes directly from the debit or credit card, so there's no account with a balance.

The advantage of Google Wallet is you can also use it to hold airline boarding passes, train tickets, loyalty cards etc. I even have my library card in it.

Not true. The stores have to agree to take Google Pay/Wallet.

And there are some credit cards that can't be used in Google Pay.

There is a lot of fear going on in the thread. People need to relax.

Google has decided to merge its Google Pay and Google Wallet functions. Everything you can do in Google Pay you will be able to do in Google Wallet. (There are some minor differences but nothing to do with making payments.)

So, the Google Pay app is going away but the ability to make payments with your phone is not. It will just be done via Google Wallet.

This is a webpage Google has put out about the changes:

Yes, they will still accept contactless payment, all they are doing is consolidating payments into a single app. The "Google Pay" trademark may very well stick around, just not the stand alone app. But really, the terminal need not say "Google Pay" to use your phone, any terminal that accepts contactless pay (a physical credit or debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay/Wallet) accepts all, they do not pick and choose what to accept, except by card account type (May not accept Discover for example).

Frank II, with respect, you're mistaken. Google Wallet holds your cards so you can pay using your phone's NFC function - the store does not have to agree to accept Google Wallet, you just tap your phone on the terminal the same way you do with a physical card. As long as the terminal accepts contactless, it will accept Google Wallet. Same with public transport.

Paul has it correct: "they do not pick and choose what to accept,"

But you're right that it's nothing to worry about. And to add, there are a number of countries, including mine, where Google Pay continues to operate (although I appreciate the OP isnin the US).

Tell that to WalMart. They accept contactless credit cards but not Google Pay.

The difference with accepting or not accepting "Google Pay" might have to do with the "Cash" function of Google Pay, where you move cash to a Google Pay account, and payment is made from that cash amount by Google, not via credit card. It is possible that a business could refuse to accept that mode of payment. But Anywhere that accepts a physical Visa card (as an example) via contactless, will accept your Visa card on your phone using any of the "wallets" or "pays". The NFC technology works the same.

The question also comes up about phone or data service, you do not need to have phone, data, or WiFi available to pay via phone, your phone just needs power.

My understanding is that Walmart doesn't accept contactless payment at all, so nothing specifically to do with Google Wallet. Sounds pretty backward to me.

Either way, OP is posting in a forum for people traveling overseas, so I imagine they're not thinking of Walmart.

I can say that I use my cards in Google Wallet to pay all day every day here in Singapore and when I travel in Asia, the UK and Australia, which is several times a month, and have never been declined at any place that accepts credit cards. I can't even remember the last time I went somewhere that takes cards but doesn't accept contactless payment.

And once again, Paul is correct. If they accept contactless payment, they accept Google Wallet.
