I have a Garmin nuvi 1300 (US and European maps already downloaded), which we will be using in Italy next month. How do I, or can I, switch from the US map to that of Italy to pre-load our seven-day driving itinerary?

I'll start by saying I don't know, but I've had a bunch of Garmins over the years.
Have you tried just looking for an address in Italy (when you get to the address page see if it allows you to change the country before you put in the post code)? It may be all set up ready to go of it has a big memory.
