On this topic, which is best for Germany: Airalo vs. Orange. We usually buy Orange esims for our iPhone when in Europe, but this next time one of us just wants data only for 14 days primarily for Google Maps,.He does not care about using phone while away from hotel for phone calls or messages and we both use WhatsApp anyway.
Appreciate any advice.

The part about data only caught my attention and I'm wondering if anyone out there has experience with Eurosim eSim products.
We're preparing for a trip to Switzerland and England so I'm going through the obligatory cellular data access dance. I had just logged on to the RS Travel Forum to ask about an eSim provider that I discovered. The provider is Eurosim (https://www.eurosim.net/) and they offer data only plans that are good for seven(1GB) or thirty days(up to 50GB). Again, these appear to be data only plans that do not support a local number for receiving or making calls or messages. Maybe that's OK for the little bit of local calling we would need. The FAQ says that a user can share their data by creating a wifi hotspot and allowing access by other devices.
The part I'm trying to get my head around is whether or not a data only plan is what we really need and whether we'd need to augment the data only eSim with another Sim that does support local calling. Suggestions?

I started using eSims last year and I love them. I have been using Airalo and am going to try out Holafly (unlimited data). I give up on calling when I’m abroad - I simply use WhatsApp and video call or voice call from WhatsApp rather than through my normal U.S.A. carrier. How I pick is based on how much data I’ll need and how long I’ll be gone. I’ve had ZERO issues using Airalo. From what I can tell, most issues stem from user error or unawareness of having an unlocked phone prior to utilizing the eSIM.

I simply download before I leave and install the sun and then I activate it upon arrival, ensuring to turn off my primary line to prevent unintended switching (ie - charged from home)

Please make sure your phones are UNLOCKED (carrier restrictions are removed) before downloading the esim. If you still have payments to make for your phone, a US carrier will likely not unlock your device.
