Hi,
my family will be leaving for France in a few days. I just came across a topic I had not seen anything about before... E-sim for i phone. I saw several recommendations for Airalo France. Has anyone had any experience with e-sim apps or cards in particular this specific one. Would it be worth us investing in this prior to our trip.
Thank you,
Karen
Karen, a lot of us use eSIM when we travel. But a lot depends on what kind of international travel plan you’re using with your current cell phone.
For example, I have T-Mobile, which provides me with a free international data plan. But sometimes, that’s not enough and I end up having to pay extra for more data because I’ve used it up too fast. So in that case an eSIM comes in very handy.
I’ve used Airalo in the past and liked it a lot. It’s a good product.
Who is your cell phone carrier? That would help to know. Also how long will you be gone? And are you going to only to France or to any other countries?
we have used Airalo e-sims for our international trips for several years now, and it works like a charm for us. we've used Airalo plans in various countries in Europe, in Israel and in Japan. we are typically away for 2-4 weeks at a time, so select 30 day options and around 20 gigabytes of data -- very reasonably priced and we have never run out of data (we overestimate because we usually rent a car for at least a portion of our travels, and use Google maps for navigation). although the directions for installation can be confusing the first time, the app and website have good instructions. one of us has an iPhone and one of us uses Android. also, we keep our own numbers for WhatsApp and use a combination of WhatsApp, iMessage and FaceTime to stay connected with our family while away.
I have used Airalo in the past, and it worked fine, but I now use bcengi, and I'll never switch back to a plan like Airalo.
With Airalo (and most other eSIMs), you buy a package that is good for one country or one region, for a certain amount of data, and for a certain period of time. When the time is up or you use all the data, you're done. You can add additional time/data if needed. When you leave the country or region, if you have anything left over, you lose it. Packages for France start at $4 USD for 3 days for 1 GB, and go up from there. https://www.airalo.com/france-esim
With bcengi, you register your credit card and buy a package (generally for $25 USD), and you get an eSIM that's good indefinitely just about anywhere in the world. You are charged by the GB. The amount varies by country, but for France (and most of Europe) it's $1.19 per GB. If you use more data than money, they charge your credit card another $25. When you leave France, whatever balance you still have in your account remains in your account indefinitely, so you can use it again on your next trip. So this really makes sense if you travel frequently (which I do). https://www.bcengi.com/
I also found installation for bcengi to be far easier than for Airalo. And once it's installed, it stays installed on your phone forever. You just disable it when you get home and enable it when you are traveling. It works automatically wherever you are.
Airalo might be a better option for you if you don't travel a lot.
Lane, I bought the Bcengi eSIM a few weeks ago and now have it on my phone ready for my trip next week. I’m looking forward to using it. I do agree that the installation was a whole lot easier than Airalo.
I will say their service was great. I had a question because I bought a new phone and needed to transfer the balance, and did it all by chat. The person I talked to was very very helpful and prompt to reply.
I’ve used Airalo for Paris trips the last two years and would do so again. Their app is very easy to use and 5gb data was enough for a two week trip. In the city we were using google maps only for walking not driving directions, so if you will have a car you might need more data.
Make sure your phone is fully unlocked before entering into eSIM world.
