Digital Passport in Apple/Google Wallet is now available (NEW UPDATE)

I just got an email telling me that I can now add my passport to Apple Wallet. I happened to have it handy so I went through the process and it's pretty simple.

You first scan the photo page and then once it reads that, you have to go to the last page where the chip is and lay it there so that it recognizes that. Then it takes you through a number of facial poses. At the end it tells you you're done but it still has to be verified. I believe this is also available for Google Wallet and I'm assuming that the process is about the same.

Just remember that you cannot use it at this time for overseas travel; only for domestic. But if you don't have a real ID yet, you can use it for that. Here is the caveat:

To create a Digital ID in wallet you must have an authentic and unexpired U.S. passport and an iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26.1 or later, or Apple Watch Series 6 or later with WatchOS 26.1 or later. Digital ID in Wallet can only be used at select TSA checkpoints in the U.S. to verify identity for domestic travel. It is not a replacement for a physical passport and cannot be used to perform functions of a passport like international travel and border crossing. You will still need an authentic and unexpired physical U.S. passport for such functions.

UPDATE: Just an FYI, it took about 5 minutes for it to verify my passport and it's now on my phone and my Apple watch.

ANOTHER UPDATE: I just got another email from Apple with a video showing how to present it to the TSA at the airport. It was very helpful. Here's a link to it: https://learn.wallet.apple/id#how-to-tiles

Oh interesting! I will have to try it later today! I found it under the Plus sign / Drivers License and ID Cards / Digital ID.

I keep it on my phone, but this would be easier, I think. Thank you!

I've had my passport in Google wallet for most of a year. I think it is a good idea, just not really sure if or when it would ever be of use. I always have my Real ID or passport on me, I suppose if I am traveling domestically and lose my wallet, I have a back-up.

I read about this yesterday and am planning to add it this weekend.

Paul, it's always easier for me to show my phone than to have to dig in my bag and find my driver's license or passport. That's why I love having it in my digital Wallet. I plan on using it at MSP in January when I head down to Florida!

Thanks Mardee! I need to renew my passport, then will add it to Apple Wallet.
Bookmarking your post so I remember how to add.

Kathy, once you start the process, Apple gives pretty explicit instructions. I found it pretty easy, although I was a little thrown by the mandates to close my eyes, smile and look down, lol! That was during the photo recognition part of it. 😂

I mainly often need my passport number (which I don’t have memorized and don’t want to mess up on). I think it will be an easier way to access that.

I also use my passport for domestic flying - will be interested to hear about the process, Mardee.

I will post an update here and let you know, TTM.

And that's a good point about being able to easily access the number. I just checked and to get there, you just click on the card, then click on the "i" for information in the top right-hand corner, and then click on "Physical Passport Information." It will then give you all the details on your passport (although you do have to use Face ID to get to that point).

Accessing the ID information in Google Wallet is a little different.

To set up your Passport as ID you must have a four digit pin to unlock the phone. You will use this to access the ID information.

First click on the three dots in the upper right hand corner, then click on "ID pass info," enter your pin.....et voila......your information.

Oh no. Does it try to correlate your actual face with your passport picture? If so I need to try to add it looking like I’ve been pulled through a knothole backwards!

Thanks for the info!

Frank, good to know—thanks! I would imagine that Apple Wallet also has a pin option. Mine is just automatically set up to use Face ID so that's what I went with.

Hahahahaha!!! I know what you mean, Pam!

I was concerned about this because it isn't just that my passport picture is of typical unflattering quality, but I look much healthier than when I renewed the passport a few years ago. Fortunately, the system did not seem to have much trouble deciding both the passport and phone selfie pictures are of the same person, because after I submitted the info it only took a few minutes for my passport info to be approved and added to my iPhone.

For what it's worth I had a slightly different experience installing my digital ID with my passport on my iPhone. I went through the process as Mardee described. However instead of taking minutes to "verify" my passport, hours passed, until I gave up thinking the process had failed. Then several days later it indeed appeared as verified, and all appears well.

That's good to know the process worked, Ben. I have no idea what the difference in time means, though. Maybe there are more people who know about it and the system is getting clogged up a little bit? I'm just guessing there; I have no idea what happened. 😊

If you add passport info to your airline(s) profile and opt-in you will be able to use the new TSA PreCheck Touchless ID. Line at certain airports. Read more at TSA website.

Android (Galaxy S24) Update:
I just added my passport to Google Wallet, it went very similar to you Apple folks.
1. Took photo of passport
2. Scanned the passport chip w/ NFC
3. Took a short video of me frontal, then swiveling head to the left and back.
4. Approve it.
5. Had to wait about 5 minutes for "Certifying".

I did not take a photo of me, it extracted the photo that was on my passport.
I didn't have to blink or open/close eyes. Had a clean white wall in background.

Under "Certificate Info" it said my "Certificate" is valid until 14 days from now. And it says "Certificate expected update" would be the same date.

So it looks like the Fed still has to approve it some more. If something goes wrong, my digital passport would expire in 2 weeks from today.

So much fun, I added my Drivers License, Insurance Card, and Vehicle Registration. Very easy.

I am just now getting around to doing this and noticed that only a few states are listed for adding a driver's license/state ID...and of course, Michigan is not one of them...

Rebecca, right now, I think there are 21 states that have the ability to use digital driver's licenses, but not all of them may be listed on Apple (not sure about Androids).. Some are still in the works, like Minnesota's, which is waiting for a bill to be passed. 🙄 Hopefully they will all get their act together and join in with the rest of the state.

Very interesting, thank you. So is this what many of you are using instead of the "have a photo copy of your passport" advice? I'll be going on a 3 generation trip (myself, my 18 yr old dtr, my sister, and our 80-yr old mom) to Norway/Copenhagen next month we are still working out all these important details.

Kathy, I still keep a photocopy in my suitcase as it doesn’t take up any space. If you lose your phone, the digital ID won’t be very helpful. Have a great trip! I’m headed to Copenhagen (and Stockholm) myself in 2 weeks.

Kathy, I'm more inclined to lose a piece of paper than I am my phone, but it's up to you. If you want to have a photocopy of it handy, then it certainly wouldn't hurt. But really, if you have your passport plus you have a digital copy on your phone, then you've already got two options there. I think that if you needed your passport, they'd be more inclined to accept a digital copy than a photocopy, but there's no harm in taking both.

The digital copy of the passport comes in very handy though. I've used it at home several times since I downloaded it, like when I'm booking flights and they need my passport number. I keep my passport put away in a safe place, and my phone is much handier when I'm at my laptop, so it's easier to access that information. 😊

The State Department actually lists a photocopy of your passport as a way to help prove U.S. citizenship if you need a replacement while traveling, so they will accept it.

https://travel.state.gov/en/international-travel/help-abroad/lost-stolen-passport.html

A friend of mine had both her passport and phone stolen when she was in Spain last year. The chances of this happening are low, but it does happen. So, I like to be prepared.

If you keep a photocopy in a zippered pocket of your suitcase, it’ll be there just in case.

Carrie, I'm not saying don't take it, but I am saying at least take both. Get a digital copy of your passport, and then, if you want to bring along a photocopy, do so.

But I'll bet you anything that directive from the State Department was written before digital passports were available. 😊

I know we are supposed to carry our passports around every day in Europe, but we don't. They seem safer back in our apartment. I get it that we can't use this digital passport in airports or between countries, but would it be accepted by the police if we are asked for our passports when we are out and about (which we never have been)?

I think it would depend on the country, Nancy. But like you, I have never ever been stopped by the police in a foreign country and asked for my passport. I used to be asked to show at a hotels when I checked in but not anymore. Although sometimes I have to give the passport information, and that’s when the digital passport comes in very handy.
