Couldn't Use My CPAP Machine in Economy Class Because of Tight Space - Suggestions?

I flew on TAP Air Portugal, overnight, from Boston to Lisbon, economy class. I brought my CPAP (minus the humidifier), carry on, no problem. But . . . the seating was crazy tight. Most crampt seats I've ever experienced. So it wasn't practical to take the CPAP out of the bag, plug it in, etc. Lost a night's sleep (very bad).

For my next trip to Europe (likely Venice) I cannot afford business class or 1st, but maybe "Premium Economy" class would give me enough room to use a CPAP? Downside: Premium Economy adds $1,000+ more to flight cost.

Any suggestions?

Please note: (1) I can't use a mini CPAP machine because they don't have ASV tech, which I need. (2) There's no option for flying BOS to Europe during the day, all flights are overnight.

I’ve never slept on an international flight overnight. I just pull an all-nighter and try to start sleeping normally once I arrive at my destination. Economy class seats are pretty much impossible to sleep in for me.

Suggestion number one, ask your doctor. Medical questions really aren’t appropriate to answer outside a medical context with a medical professional who is treating you.

Suggestion number two, can you get some kind of dental appliance that would help?

Suggestion number three, can you mitigate your sleep apnea with surgery, weight loss, anything like that?

Good luck. I’ve struggled with medical conditions limiting my travel options and it’s really frustrating. I hope you can figure something out without splurging on expensive flights.

I and I know many others that can't or don't sleep on flights anyway; so we go into downloading movies on our phones or tablets and watching them to kill time. Moreover we only book lodging that allows checkin at any time so if the jet lag is too much we can just sleep. The day of arrival the older I have gotten does not count anymore.

In your case take the 7am flight Boston to London.
Layover the night in London and get up next day and fly to Venice

Take a daytime flight to whatever in Europe is available from Boston, spend the night there and continue on to Venice the next day?

You will have to do the math to see how the options price out, for your particular schedule

I hate overnight flights. So, I fly to JFK (NY) and take a daytime flight to London. There are a few of them. Spend the night near the airport then continue my journey the next day.

There are daytime flights to London out of Boston.

There is also a daytime flight a few days a week on Icelandair from Boston to Reykjavik. I did this earlier this month. You can stay at an airport hotel and continue your journey the next morning or take advantage of Icelandair's free stopover program to see a bit of Iceland.

Since switching to daytime flights, I have had no real jet lag.

My understanding is that CPAP use inflight is generally not allowed.
I use a CPAP every single night, except on overnight flights.

Why not take the British Airways day flight to London from Boston. Spend the night in London and go to your next destination

Another option is to pay for two economy seats. If you want to do this, you do not just go online and book 2 seats in your name. You need to call the airline and make sure it works for them and work it out because it is has to be specially ticketed o

While CPAPs are allowed on most airlines, you’ve run into the major problem on an economy seat- space They are not very practical there.

The other problem is quite often those plugs under the seat don’t work. I flew home from Boston yesterday in economy and tried to use one to charge my phone and it wouldn’t work.

It varies by airline, but what we now do is purchase an economy ticket, then pay for an upgrade into a premium economy seat. This comes out less than purchasing a premium economy ticket to begin with--roughly 300 more per ticket in my case. (You don't get other perks like a refundable fare, but you get that better seat!)
They are not palatial (I consider it just the amount for basic human comfort), but premium should give you sufficient space.

There's no option for flying BOS to Europe during the day, all flights are overnight.

British Airways has a morning flight from Boston to London. Leaves Boston at 7:25am and lands in London Heathrow at 6:55pm. Flight # BA 238.

Interesting, I learned some things in this thread. I think the best option for me is to add one day to the trip & use the 1st day to recover from the overnight nap-at-best.

Thanks for all replies.
