The important thing is that it is a gradual roll out from Sunday till next April - not everywhere will start all at once.
UK ports/eurostar/le shuttle are the only places in UK likely to be ready day 1.
If you are travelling, check the status of the rollout in the country/airport you will actually be arriving in.
If EES is not yet operational, make sure you get your passport stamped in and out.
I have no idea what process comes with October 12, or what the process is prior to that, other than when I landed at BER on October 2 my first stop right before seeing a German border officer was at a self-service kiosk where I scanned my passport, scanned fingerprints and had a picture taken. No line and a couple minutes total.
It's good to know that it's working somewhere.
