City walk tour apps (self-guided tours)

As a solo traveler, I usually do my own research and plot a city walk tour that works for me.
In the past, I've used an app called "GPS My City". It has worked okay and I've paid for the full annual subscription in the past so I could edit and have custom walks. My subscription if up for renewal but I want to explore other options before committing again. They do have a free version that is basic with standard routes mapped out, but I like to customize them to my liking.

I've seen RS Audio tour mentioned here as well. I am exploring new apps for city walk tours that provides both map and a little description in written format (not audio). When exploring a city, I like to hear the sounds of the place and not have earphones on all the time.

Has anyone used any phone apps with guided maps during your travels? Or do you just pin on your map places you want to visit and follow directions there?

I frequently use the walks in the RS guide. When available, I've been quite happy with RS Audio tours.

I've developed a couple of walks for myself in Paris but what I did was very low-tech....I did plot it out on googlemaps but also did a googledocs for each site I wanted to see.

Before this last trip I also asked ChatGPT for a list of specific sites in Paris related to Egyptology. I did get a walk linking them from that website but never wound up doing it last trip. I did find that it did not list all the sites I'd found by searching google and tracking down things but I love research so go pretty deep. It seems like ChatGPT, with which I am NOT really familiar, just skimmed the surface. I might not have queried correctly though. However it might be a starting point for you.

I'm interested in the replies you get as well. I, too, like to do DIY walks and do not want to listen to audio when I am on a sidewalk. I feel like I need to hear what is going on around me.

@Pam - Have you tried GPS My City? It worked well for me in Kyoto, Copenhagen, Helsingor (sightseeing guide) and a few other places. It takes time to play around with the given maps and tailor to what you want. Reason I want to explore other options.

I may try to create my own for my upcoming trip on Google Maps using GPS as a starting guide. It will miss the descriptions, though. I guess I can always just have a Google Doc saved like you did.

I have used the Voice Map app for several walks in Paris. You pay per tour/walk you download. I found it easy to use and the gps guided walks were very helpful to follow. You can preview a section in advance to see if it might work for you.

Thanks, Katheryne. I'll play with Voice Map fee preview version to see if it works for me.

If you are comfortable with Google Maps, you can enhance it and turn it into a guided tour using Lens & AI insights. Information can be found here
