Check for airline Ticket Receipt if you make changes on-line

Hi everyone, just sharing a hint to hopefully prevent any last-minute stress for you when you’re on your last month/week before a trip.

I went into Delta on-line Sunday evening and changed my reservation to go RT to Malaga instead of Madrid. I made the change, selected my seat assignments, and saved it. I pulled up the Delta site a second time to make sure it came up and all looked fine. Thankfully I’m one of those old-school types and printed the reservation and filed it.

This afternoon I decided I should go into the reservation and see if I could reserve a seat on the Transvia portion of the flight, and…..no reservation! Nothing to Madrid, nothing to Malaga! I called them, and with my confirmation # he said the reservation change didn’t completely finish, so I still had a hidden reservation to Madrid - oh no! Wow, this would have been a big mess because I also slid the dates one day to accommodate the change better with the new train route.

He stated that if you don’t receive an email after a change with a new receipt, the ticket has not been changed. So, hopefully sharing this prevents this type of “gotcha” for others.

Funny timing. I booked a flight last night and was thinking about the amount of time to research vs book vs all the little steps to organize after booking. I always save a copy of the email itinerary to Dropbox for my Dad, as backup to filing it in the email folder for that trip.

I was thiinking I should streamline a bit, but I guess my overkill, er diligence, serves a purpose.

Glad you caught that!

Jean, I'm glad that you were able to get that fixed.

I'm not a paper person, but I always check to make sure I have a reservation confirmation in my email before I leave the website where I booked it. I also take a screenshot of the reservation webpage so that I have all the relevant information and keep it until I get that confirmation.

Paper or screenshot, it's a good idea to always save that information just in case, no matter how you save it. So thank you for the reminder!

OMG, Jean! Let me add to David in Seattle's list--"vigilance"! Mardee's "I always check to make sure I have a reservation confirmation in my email before I leave the website where I booked it." Yup, checking BEFORE leaving the website (or the telephone conversation with an airline's agent) is paramount. I had not and almost met with disaster.

A week ago, I made reservations for my husband with Air France with the miles I had accumulated and with cash for my ticket. The tickets provided for a change without a penalty. A few days later, I convinced my husband that we should lengthen our stay to include our 55th wedding anniversary and he agreed. Back on the phone with AF--first time took 45 minutes of waiting. Well, my husband's ticket transferred with no problem, but mine did not! I didn't realize this until I went to my emails to check and, nope! I had no ticket at all. Back to AF's live agent who said that I could not cancel my original flight and book another one. Back and forth, back and forth before she finally got it that I wasn't canceling, I was changing. Only then did la luce click on for her. Ugh! While still on the phone with the agent, I checked my emails to make sure. There it finally was. Printed, saved, etc.
Thanks for the word-to-the-wise, Jean.
addendum: my change was with a live agent on the phone--just check, period.

The odd situation with it was that it gave me an error. - sometimes does this when trying to reserve a seat on the Transavia piece, for instance. But when I finished & opened my reservation after getting out of Delta on-line to see if I had to start all over again, there was my confirmation number with a trip to Malaga (not the previous Madrid) and all of the flights I had inputted, including my seat assignments chosen. If it was a true error, the confirmation number should have brought up the Madrid flight, not the new one. And then a few days later, entering the confirmation number just gave me “no reservations with this #”.

Yes, I always have my iPad on Delta when I am on the phone to see that the agent has the right flights when making changes and refresh it as we’re speaking. Thankfully they still had some good seats left.
