Charging Nikon Coolpix battery

I have a charger for the camera, consisting of a cable and a little black box that plugs into the wall socket.

I am wondering if I can substitute, for the little black box, the little white cube that is used (with a cable) to charge an iPad Mini. The camera cable has a standard MP3 connector that fits the white iPad cube, and when I plug that cube in with the camera, the camera blinks green slowly just as it does when I use the black box.

If I can take just one charger, the white one, I'll save 1.7 oz., a little bit of space, and have a shorter packing list, all of which helps.

Where are you going and does the white one (or the black one) work with universal voltage?

We will be in France, Portugal and Switzerland. I know the white one works with universal voltage since I used it in Europe last summer without a voltage converter; the black one says "100V-240V", so I guess that would work too.

I have just been charging the camera with the white box, and the blinking green light has disappeared. So either the battery is damaged (not a big deal, I can order another one), or the camera is ready to go. I'll try it and see.

I have the same quandary. But I think not for two reasons. Power differences and charging time. iPad input 0.5A, out 5.2v 2.4A, Coolpix camera input 0.2A out 5.0V 1.0A . Im more concerned about whether one camera battery will be enough. I am planning to take both chargers so I can charge multiple devices simultaneously. I have not decided whether to buy the iPad camera card adapter, try to transfer pics to iPad wirelessly then save to the cloud, or leave pics on memory cards. Thoughts Anyone?

Carol, that is good news, thanks.

Pam, the difference in amperage (?) between the two chargers is a concern; but as long as it does not fry the battery (as Carol's remark suggests it does not), then I'm good.

As for saving photos, I've been using a short (maybe 5") cable for the iPad that downloads camera memory cards. I then store the photos on the iPad until I'm done traveling, and delete them from the camera after each download. So far I have not needed more than one memory card, though I take another one as a backup anyway. Having them on the iPad is convenient for uploading to Facebook, to keep friends posted. I guess I could also, just as easily, put them on Flickr, but have not tried that yet.

I've used the black box from my camera charger to charge my iPad and phone, no problem. Though I do travel with both.
I've also tried using the iPad as a back up for pictures. It did not work so well for me. My iPad mini is only 16GB so there wasn't much room, I tried uploading from the iPad to my Smugmug but the iPad strips the original Nikon name from each photo and replaces it with IMG###- it seemed to start over IMG001....with each download so when I'd go to upload to Smugmug there were 'duplicate' files each time. Now I either bring my laptop and plenty of memory cards. The iPad, if I recall correctly, also doesn't save the photos at their original size. I prefer my exif data and picture size to be intact, though. I use a 16mp Coolpix P300 and a 16mp D7000.

Susan, that is good to know, thanks. Presumably it would take longer to charge the iPad with the black box, but that is not a big deal.

My iPad has enough storage that picture storage is not an issue. But the technical points you raise are new to me, as I am very much a duffer photographically/technologically. So far I have been able to download the pictures OK from the iPad to a home computer, and scarcely even notice the numbers that index them. (I suppose one of these days I should begin the task of naming/editing/culling all those pictures; presumably then the numbers would be replaced with names.) And as for file size, this has so far not been an issue for posting to Facebook, which is about all I do with them aside from looking at them myself or with friends/family. Since you mentioned it, I checked on my Coolpix S3500 and was surprised to see 20.1 mp. I should probably get serious about learning to use it.

Joel,

One other point to consider.....

I would never travel with just one charger for multiple gadgets as if it quits for any reason, that would be a significant annoyance during the holiday. I always have a backup for important equipment like chargers. YMMV.

Ken, this is where I smack my forehead and think "oh right! I did not think of that!"

I agree, saving the the extra couple ounces is not worth the potential complications of not having a backup. It is good to know, though, that both boxes will work with both devices.

thanks everyone

Joel,

You may be fine with just one Charger, but Ken's No. 1 travel rule is "always have a backup for important equipment".

Hope you have a great trip!
