Can anyone help me put a Table of Contents on my Wordpress blog?

As some of you know, I blog my travels pretty extensively. My blog is pretty long at this point and people are often asking me if I can put a table of contents onto the site. I’ve tried and tried but I cannot figure out how to do it inexpensively. At some point last year, I saw a way to do it, but I can’t re-find those details I tracked down.

As I’ve been looking around the last few weeks in preparation for an upcoming trip, the only option I see is to upgrade my plan to a business plan (expensive!) and then use plug-ins to add a TOC.

Is there a free and simple way to do this? My blog is linked to my profile on this site - I don’t think I’m allowed to put it in my post. I have about 3 years of trips on there and they display from newest post to oldest. It sure would be nice if a TOC showed up along the right side of the screen. I’ve seen that on plenty of other blogs.

Thanks to anyone who can help!!

i don't know how to do a TOC but have you tried using categories and tags so people can find specific info? I have categories such as countries (Italy, France, etc.) and other things like Restaurants, Hiking, Transportation. then I use tags for cities (Rome, Ortisei, London) as well as for specific items (Pizza, Wine) and sites (Forum, Louvre, Matterhorn). Could that work for you?

@Laurel - Thanks, I'll give it a look. I'm not sure if I can add those but anything would help. It costs about $350 PER YEAR to upgrade to an account that lets me add a plug in for a table of contents. I feel so certain that, when I researched it last year, there was a simple way to do a TOC without the plug ins.

I think what Laurel says makes a lot of sense. Tags and categories are surely easier to manage — and to find.

I hope you find something that works!!

Hi Valerie,

Can the people at Wordpress answer your question? Where are you going next? I just want to say that I am really enjoying your blog posts. I can’t seem to manage a daily post on FB or even journaling when touring as I am too pooped to pop at the end of the day so kudos to you for doing this.

@Mary - Thanks! I’m headed to Israel and Jordan in November.

Thanks, all, I’ll work on getting tags on there.

Mary, I can identify with that too-pooped-to-pop feeling, but I blog anyway as a sort of journal and trip record and also to substitute for postcards or other individual communication to friends and family.

Valerie, looking forward to your blog updates and future posts.
