I've gotten out of the habit of taking pictures. Instead of buying a new camera (Canon Powershot SX720 maybe), I'm wondering if add-on lenses for iPhone 6s are worth using. Olloclip is one brand. Has anyone used this? Amazon has cheap lenses but I figure you get what you pay for. I keep a "lifeproof" waterproof case on my phone which may interfere with lens quality or fitting over the case.
My traveling companion will be taking her camera so I'm thinking we can share pictures.
Thanks for your help.
We bought one of those on Amazon a month ago. It's an inexpensive thing to play around with (less than $20 as I recall) -- kinda fun -- but we tired of it quickly. Do you really see yourself fiddling with a clip-on lens to take pictures?
We've been traveling for about 10 days now and, frankly, we haven't gotten out the 2 fancy 'real' cameras we brought. The iPhones (a 6 & a 7) have been our go-to cameras (with no add-ons). Sooo easy to just pull out of the pocket for a quick shot anywhere.
Also, if your case is at all thick around the iPhone lens I don't think you'll get good results. I had a bit of vignetting that the chap in the Apple Store said was from the clip-on lens not being right up against the iPhone lens.
I've used the Moment wide and telephoto lenses on my iPhone 6s and they are fantastic. I bring them along even when I have my DSLR with me. I've found they actually do help improve image quality over just the bare iPhone lens and they're perfect for travel. Their free app also supports RAW shooting (rather than JPEG) if that's something you care about, otherwise they work perfectly with the native iOS camera app.
Have not tried the Olloclip, though.
horse,
I've looked at accessory lenses for the iPhone, but I also use an Otterbox case and it's not possible to use many of the lenses without removing the case. I also don't like mucking about with finicky accessories when out touring, especially as I will never get images from a phone that will match my DSLR. If I'm going to bother bringing along a large and heavy DSLR, I may as well use it to get the best images possible.
I have Olloclips on previous iPhones, and they are very nice. They do not fit with 3rd party cases, but Olloclip makes their own case that works nicely. If you are thinking about getting an Olloclip, definitely get the case to go with it.
