Bought Orange eSim - please clarify

I bought the Orange Holiday eSim. I do not want to ACTIVATE my time until 10 days into my trip.

If I install at home before leaving as Orange advises, it sounds like you are ready to go as soon as you land.

How do I ensure that I am not actually using it until 10 days after my arrival.

Many thanks in advance. I leave in 2 days. Yikes!

You must turn on that plan before you can use it. So if you install it at home, make sure it is turned off when you finish. (For iPhone, it is under cellular data.)

Then when you are in country and want the plan to begin, turn it on. Make sure data roaming is also on.

If you don’t want to use your home cell data plan, make sure it is turned off.

Can you please stay on one thread for nearly the same question?
Technology forum would be the better place for such a question which has nothing to do with a specufic European destination.

Indeed, I have now found that location on RS forum and will use it if I have tech questions in the future

TexasTravelMom: Many thanks.

Hi can you be a bit more specific as to where to buy a eSIM on the internet for my iPhone and how to install and turn off ? We are going to Sicily in a couple weeks and normally just buy a SIM card and pop it in but the eSIM sounds more promising. Thanks Lynn

Easiest way to buy is to use the Apple app or Android app. Go to the respective App Store or Play Store to find the app for your phone. After you purchase, you will receive an email on how to install the eSIM on your phone.

Easiest way not to activate it is to wait until the date you want to use it before installing the eSim from your email.

The eSim will activate as soon as it detects an available signal in Europe and your limited time with the eSim will start to run. If you have already installed it and want to delay activation, you have to take care to turn off your mobile data before you land in Europe where there is coverage.

I have used Nomad eSIMs with great success, and other RS posters have posted about good experiences with Airalo eSIM use. Either is available for purchase and subsequent download onto your phone; just Google Nomad eSIM and you'll find them. You typically also download an app from the eSIM provider to set everything up. Nomad provides excellent step-by-step instructions, and I assume Airalo does also.

I hate Orange !

I spent two hours trying and failing to buy an eSIM plan and then chatting with a “person” who was actually an AI robot
who answered my simple questions by referring me to their website.
I finally determined that the plan I wanted was not available for purchase in the USA .
(but was available in 38 other countries!)
F minus for sales support, so I can only shudder at how bad their technical support would be once I am travelling.

Not sure where you are going, but for most of the EU Telecom is the best eSim I have found. Just go into a Telecom shop and ask them to put an eSim on your (unlocked) phone. It takes about 15 minutes to install and complete the purchase and it's available for use at that point. Cancel when you're done using it.

Hello all --
Update:

I did take my trip in March and activated the eSim that I purchased before leaving home when I needed it 10 days after arriving in Europe. After visiting an Orange store 3 different times (twice in Barcelona and once in Bordeaux), I learned that I had not registered it. Fortunately, this part of my trip was not on a schedule and I had time to work on my issue before heading to the Dordogne where I really needed access to communications.

I went to Amsterdam in July and decided to reactivate my Orange account. I did this the day before leaving for Europe. It was not straight forward like I expected. The advertising makes it seem so simple. But, it worked when I arrived so .....

It was a pain both times. I think I am going to consider buying a second phone for travel. I wonder if inserting a sim card when I arrive in Europe might be simpler for a non-techy 77-year-old who needs technology!
