Does anyone have experience and recommendations for iphone apps that enable use of cell phone as binoculars? In am interested in direct viewing (mosaics in Ravenna, Scravegni Chapel in Paudua) more than for taking photos. Thanks.

The phone will be digital instead of optical which has some limitations. If binocular and up closer is important, this use a small 6x, 8x binoculars. They will be sharper in the long run.

I have read that there are now some apps for the phone that are supposedly pretty good so I am curious if anyone has used ones they liked. It is not clear to me if the apps are mostly for improving the zoom for photos or also work well for viewing.

Honestly, the best you're likely to do is to maximize the zoom on your camera app and use that, as you'll probably get very good auto-focus and maybe even image stabilization, depending on your phone. I've looked at the two magnifier apps on my phone and they're really only good for close work. Obviously "bi"nocular viewing isn't possible with a single display screen.
