audio device to hear RS guide's presentations?

My niece and I will be on RS BOI tour starting 12 May. Curious about being able to hear our guide well on the coach as well as on town walks & other sights. Each of us has perfectly fine hearing; I'm just curious about any supplemental audio we should be prepared to use or have. Will we need anything more than our own iPhones with wired earphones?? Should we be prepared to plug into something other than our iPhones??

You will be provided with a "Whisper" device and earbuds. Many people like to bring their own personal earbuds or headphones.

The coach generally has it's own audio system, nothing needed.

Janet - It's a little wireless receiver into which you connect an earbud/headphone. The guide has a broadcasting unit, allowing them to speak at normal volume into a microphone, that you then hear through your device.

Thank you, Scudder. That sounds very doable. Last detail, I think - will the device accept any sort of connector that my earphone might already have?

The whisper device will not accept the lightning connection that comes with a newer iPhone. There are little devices you can buy in Best Buy or Apple stores that will let you connect your lightning connector end to a round plug like phones used to have for audio devices. If you’re planning to use your wired Apple earbuds for connection to the whisper device you will need this adapter. Just FYI, for anyone else reading this, as I know you mentioned having a wired connector, wireless earbuds will not connect with whisper devices. In some places, such as the Louvre, I’ve noticed that instead of having a group follow a tour guide around in the museum, they are recommending that you download the Rick Steves Audioeurope app and listen to his audio tour. For that, you will use your own phone. The directions you received with your tour information will mention whether this will be the case for you, depending on which tour you are taking.

and they dont use the Whisper on the bus. The bus's PA system the tour leader uses may or not be loud enough for you. Try and get seats close to the front if you want to hear, or in the back if you don't.
