another SIM/wifi calling questions

Hello.
When I go Europe, I usually just add Verizon's international plan. But last time I went over because we got lost in Venice and kept using google maps. That data overage cost me $100.00. So I'm looking to to getting a sim card. I have an old unlocked iPhone 4s. I've used this years before in Asia with a GSM sim card. I just bought this sim card at Amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FI1JW72/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Anybody used this before? I was going to get the Orange but delivery would be after my departure date. I'm heading to UK and France. Will I be able to use the regular iMessage when sending texts or should I download viber or whatsapp?

I am also bringing my iPhone8. If I put it on airplane mode but put it on wi-fi and enable wi-fi calling, will I be able to receive calls & texts from the US? Is wi-fi calling safe? Will I be getting any extra charges from Verizon if I use their wifi calling?

TIA.

I've used wifi calling and texting with Verizon on a number of trips and have not gotten any extra charges, as long as you keep your phone in airplane mode and just enable wifi. It works well with WhatsApp, Facetime, etc. It works well as long as you have a good wifi connection.

My experience for 30 days in Ireland is the same as the previous poster. Also if you utilize google maps offline, you can use the map feature in airplane mode and never utilize Verizon’s international plan unless you want to.

Download maps.me and then the country you'll be going to. Both are free.

Then turn off your data when you get there. (Airplane mode is one way.) Your phone will use the maps and your GPS to show you where you are and the streets around you.

Google Maps "offline" does not support walking or public transit directions, FYI. Only driving. It would not have been much good for someone lost in Venice

Perhaps Maps.Me does.
