Airalo eSIM in UK - worked great

Just wanted to add a trip report using the Airalo 'Uki' eSim in England for a week. This was my first experience with an eSIM and it worked very well! I'm going to cut to the chase with my main tip - this eSim allows tethering so its perfect to buy it for just one phone if you are traveling as a couple or family that is staying together. We were traveling as a couple, so I bought the 10GB eSIM for $19.50 (I had $3 off referral code) and installed this on my phone, and my wife and son were able to use the personal hotspot from me so they had data too. We used just under 6GB in a week.

Details:

  • iPhone 14 Pro (I am on AT&T, unlocked)
  • Airalo 10GB
  • Used in London and the Cotswolds for a 7 day trip
  • Wife and son tethered via wifi hotspot

I activated the eSim before we left using the instructions from airalo. This went as expected - there is sort of an error at the end because the network won't be found while in the US, which is expected. When we arrived at Heathrow and I turned off Airplane mode the signal picked up and I was fully activated within a minute or so.

I am a moderate to heavy data user and knew we'd want data on the go for navigation as I was driving while in the Cotswolds. I wasn't sure if 10GB would be enough but it turned out to be plenty. I chose airalo for the UK because they work off two networks: O2 and Three. We only had signal issues briefly in some rural areas. Another nice feature was if the data plan was not enough, you can top up with an incremental amount for the same price as a new eSIM.

@Jeremy thank you for taking the time and putting in the review. The plan is to try this out in the next few weeks.

Jeremy, was this a data only e-sim? Looking at the Airola website, I only see data only plans. I am planning on using an Orange e-sim in Germany and Ireland. However, I have not been pleased with my past use of Orange and I am looking for an alternative.

@John yes this was a data only SIM. I only ended making one unplanned call and I just used my AT&T line for that. Airalo does have a pricier global eSIM with voice and text called Discover+. When I was doing research I found a site (there are many) that reviews eSIMs and discovered that there are several vendors similar to Airalo that have different options including voice and multi-country coverage. Holafly was one of these that might be worth a look.

The site that helped me most was phonetravelwiz and while a bit wordy, it helped me sort the options and see which actual carriers the SIMs were on.
