What to do during Rains in Interlaken and around ?

Hello experts and fellow travelers

Thanks to the inputs and forum posts, I could finalize my Interlaken visit plan. We will be at Interlaken from 30.06 to 03.07 and here is my plan in brief.

Day 1 (half day) - visit Harder Kulm
Day 2 - Go to Wengen and visit Männlichen. Then hike from Wengen to Lauterbrunnen to see Staubbach falls. Later on, travel to Grindelwald to see first Cliff walk by Tissot.
Day 3 - Travel to Engelberg to see Mt Titlis
Day 4 (half day) - Possibly visit Niederhorn or may be boat cruise in Lake Thun or Lake Brienz.

This plan looked good to me but just happen to see the weather after making all the bookings (BO card, Nonrefundable trains and hotels) and now, I am very disappointed.

It seems there is rain all the days and it says 60-70%. Can someone suggest (based on their experience) that what I can do and can we still continue with the plans. I am not sure if I can even see the panoramic views for which I am coming to BO area ? Just really irritated with the rains and disappointed. It will be great if someone can suggest that what part of my itinerary will be a total flop show and what is still doable ?

Thanks for your time

30/6 is a week away. Nobody knows what the weather will be then. Currently they aren't even able to give a reliable forecast for the next 12 hours. You'll have to wait and see and be flexible in your planning.

This older thread mentions several activities for rainy days in the region:

Also, check the forecast each day; sometimes it calls for rain a day or two before, but in the morning it’s clear. These sites have weather cams so you can see what it looks like at several popular sites to visit.

Don't despair. A forecast is just a guesstimate. Also, depending on the cloud distribution, even when it rains, it may last for just a while. Keep your hopes up.

It always rains at least part of the day. A totally clear day in that part of the world is rare. Go for walk, do what you planned, don't worry about it. I was up on the Zugspitze a couple days ago and the visibility was maybe 30 ft due to the clouds. 4 hours later it was clear. We have not had 2 clear days together in 6 months.

Just wanted to update on how things went during our trip to Interlaken and around. Thanks for all the inputs from other members.

  1. Weather was overall not too disappointing as there were clouds coming and going. We could see all what we have planned for like Harder Kulm, Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Mannlichen, Wengen etc.

  2. Mt Titlis was bit disappointing as on the top it was very foggy and raining. We waited for almost 3-4 hours but finally decided to come down and move with other plans. Funny thing was that the weather forecast a day before predicted that there might be little sunshine :). One tip, before buying the ticket, look for the weather cam at the ticket window or on their website. You may end up saving 50 Euros per person (after applying BO pass).

  3. We bought the BO pass for 4 days and tried to use it to the fullest. Even did the cruise on Lake Thun and lake Brienz which was very nice.

  4. Not sure what is the wrong with the Swiss souvenirs as even smaller items like fridge magnets were minimum of 10 to 12 CHF. In my experience across other European countries and US, they hardly go beyond 5 Euros. Seems like a very organized way of scamming the gullible tourists !! I wish there is some place where I can cheaper fridge magnets, tried Amazon.de but nothing. :(

Overall, a nice trip mainly due to the support from weather god. On a side note, spent almost Euro 3200 for 4 persons 4 days.

Next - Will plan better and possibly go for more of hiking (mainly easy to light moderate), Mt Zermatt, Mt Jungfrau and a ride in Glacier express or Bernina express. Need to have at least a week or 10 days to have a much relaxer vacation.

Thanks for circling back and filling us in.

You said that you did both boats - on Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Did you or your party decide which you prefered? Curious....

I guess we like Lake Brienz more as you can disembark and even visit Geissbach falls (which unfortunately we just saw from the cruise due to jam packed schedule).

But no harm in doing both as long as you have time and of course, its covered in your travel pass.

yep, we also prefer Brienzersee. We normally stay in Brienz as well. Love the boats.

Everything costs double in Switzerland, so I’m not surprised that is true of refrigerator magnets.
