Trails in Murren area.

I'll be staying in Murren for 4N (as part of a longer trip starting in Amsterdam, Rhine Cruise, Grindelwald 2N, Murren then Lucerne 2N). While in Murren we plan to Walk Murren ↓ to Gimmelwald, see Schilthorn, visit Allmendhubel (with a hike down to Murren), day trip to Lauterbrunnen to do the valley walk/waterfalls.
I'm trying to decide which one of the following hikes to take from Allmendhubel. I am 65 very fit/active while hubby is 70 "fairly" active. I know I could handle any of these but not sure about him.
Blumental Flowery Trail - easy/mod downhill 2.2km (1.3 miles), 1hr. This one seems pretty straightforward and easy. Are the views as good?
North Face Trail - moderate 2.5 vs 4hrs? 4 vs 4.6 miles? 1250 ft elev gain? I keep reading different things on this hike - how long does it really take? 1.5hrs uphill vs slight uphill & mostly downhill?
Alternative North Face Trail - Easy/Mod 7.5 km (4.6 miles), 2.5-3hrs. I'm thinking we could do part of this possibly?

Also, do the hotels provide or stores sell trail maps? I looked on Amazon and not seeing any good "trail" maps.
I would so appreciate any insights into these trails please.

Patti,

The walk from Mürren to Gimmelwald is very easy so no map will be required. As I recall, there's a paved trail that goes downhill from Mürren. The trip takes about 20 minutes or so.

For other hikes in the area, you will get some good suggestions from THIS BOOK.. The author lives in Oregon and posts to this forum, so it might be possible to contact her directly.

You may get some good ideas by attending a local meeting of the RS travel group - https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/travel-meetings/portland-area-travel-group-meeting-a8a9984e-b6c4-415f-a7cd-f6b0cfab2c01 .

Your option of “North Face Trail” does not start at Allmendhubel. It starts at the Schilthornbahn and goes up and around Allmendhubel before ending in Mürren. The better option is what you’re referring to as the alternative. It’s the Northface hike done counterclockwise starting at the top of Allmendhubel and ending at the Schilthornbahn station in Mürren.
Here is our custom map of the exact route. If you plan to do it, it’s important to follow this exact map and not just follow signs to Mürren or you’ll end up on the wrong route.

My in laws who are in their upper 60s and who I would consider not fit and not very active do this hike with us all the time.

In regards to maps, if you are somewhat tech savvy, the Komoot app is great. If you want a paper map and additional assistance, go to the tourist office inside the Sportzentrum in Mürren.

Thank you all for you valuable input. Ken, I was able to get that book you recommended free on my kindle. I'll look thru that and decide if it's worth buying.
I decided we'll do the short 20min loop Blütenweg Flower Trail and the North Face trail., since it sounds like my hubby could manage that one.
Wanderweg, thanks for the great map and tip on Komoot. I do use AllTrails which is similar but I'll have to renew my membership to get the offline maps for my trip. It shows the same map as Komoot and distance. I was just confused since I had read/watched videos with differing info on that trail length and level of difficulty. Maybe some were referring to the more challenging uphill version from Murren up to Allmendhubel. I would do the counterclockwise way for sure like you recommended. I also like the idea of stopping into the Sportzentrum once in Murren to get a hardcopy map and addt'l info.
Thank you again everyone! You're input is much appreciated.

Just know that the Blumental Trail is the same as the Northface counterclockwise for the first 15% or so and then has somewhat similar views, just not as dramatic. For variety, I’d recommend doing Allmendhubel to Winteregg on the Mountain View trail instead of Blumental or for something easy - Mürren to Gimmelwald.

Laurel and Ric who author that book have walked every inch of what they write about, and being around your husband's age they take it a bit easy now so timings should be good.

I recommend the book.

Happy trails, for both you and your husband.

Murren up to Allmendhubel.

Yes, exactly. The hiking route described on the Mürren tourist website is like this. For Swiss the main idea is to hike up from a lower elevation and work your way up to the most beautiful viewpoints rather than the other way around.

You have far more control going uphill - most slips and falls occur on downhill sections. It is also more difficult on knees and joints. For this reason I would recommend using poles and just take your time, stop at the benches and/or restaurants along the way. It is a beautiful hike no matter which direction you hike it!

I see that you also wrote this:

I'm thinking we could do part of this possibly?

There are a few alternate options for what will be your more downhill section (counterclockwise route), you can ask the tourist info staff to show you on the map - but you will still need to go down at least 200 m in elevation near the end, there is no bus or train or anything that you can jump onto with this hike.

Haha Nigel! Thanks for making us much younger than we are! (Now 73 and 82!) Appreciate the kind shout-out.

Patti, LMK if this fellow Oregonian can help.

Thanks again for the additional info, and Laurel thank you for your offer to touch base if needed. I may take you up on that if I still have questions after reading your book.
