We are doing a river cruise and disembarking in Basel. We decided to stay in Switzerland for 5 extra days. My thought is to go to one region and stay out there and do day trips. Maybe Grinderwald or Gimmelwald. Which is best? Rick doesn’t even mention Grinderwald in his book, and I’m wondering why? Any insights to best itinerary if staying in the Berber Oberland region? Also, if we are staying in this one region mostly, but traveling back to Basel for our flight, is it best to just pay as you go on the train, or do the half price fare? So confusing!

Would advise staying IN the Alps, Wengen or Murren.
Gimmelwald is tiny, and Grindelwald more commercial.
As for the travel passes, you need to do some research for the activities you're interested in, such as boat rides and / or discounts on the mountain gondolas and cogwheel trains. Note that the prices on SBB app assume you already have a Half- Fare card. Figuring out passes confuses everyone, and you just need to pencil out all your routes and make your best decision.
Is this for this year? Lodging is in short supply and expensive, due to the high demand, coming off of COVID.
Safe travels!
The Alps are great. If you can get accommodation in Murren, Wengen, or Lauterbrunnen that is wonderful. If not, plenty of other amazing places to visit. Another option is Luzern as a base. Mountain and lake experiences are available.
If you plan to take any mountain lifts, you might find the half fare card helpful. The only way to know for sure is to price out the trips you think you might make.
Do you like easy hikes/walks or do you prefer scenic rides, taking in views? And when is this? Season makes a difference.
The Berner Oberland is a wonder of beautiful vistas and many easy-to-moderate walks/hikes: plenty to fill your time. Exactly how many nights do you have to devote to this? You will most likely need to be in Basel the night before your flight unless your flight is later in the day.
In general the Half Fare Card will serve you well and if you stay in the Berner Oberland, probably a Berner Oberland Regional Pass.
