Just given a few tour options and would like some help on which to choose

My husbands company is sending us to Switzerland at the beginning of April. We fly into Zurich and will be staying in Interlaken at the Victoria/Jungfrau grand hotel and spa. They plan everything for us but have given us many options to choose from. I have never been to Switzerland so would like input on these if you have ever been. Please let me know if they are must do/fabulous or just ok. FYI we are 40, fit, and have a lot of energy.
We choose 4...
-Guided tour Bernese/trummelbach waterfalls
-cooking class with michelin star chef Torsten Goetz
-Mount Schilthorn
-bike tour- Bernese Oberland lakes
-Zermatt/Matterhorn tour (says this is 7.5 hours)
-spa services at the hotel

So far we are thinking waterfalls, Mt Schilthorn and Matterhorn tour and torn on the last one. Would love any feedback from you all!
Thank you so much for you help:)))

Must you choose the dates for the tours in advance? I'm thinking about the uncertainty of the Alpine weather in April (or any other month, for that matter).

How many days do you have at Interlaken?

yes, we have to choose this week. They will rearrange if the weather is bad and make sure we have something comparable. We are in Interlaken for 6 nights.

After we book these tours, we would like to add 3 nights onto our trip and would love advice on that!

I don’t know if you will have any leeway at the end of each daily tour, but the Bernese Oberland options are close to Interlaken and an easy train ride back, so if you can arrange to go back on your own after each official tour is done, you might enjoy hiking around a bit on your own, then taking the train back to Interlaken.

The Trummelbach Waterfalls are interesting and recommended as a rainy day activity by Rick Steves’ book b/c you can enjoy the sights even if it’s cloudy and overcast. There is a nice trail from the falls back to Lauterbrunnen that takes about 40 minutes to walk. You get great views of the magnificent valley.

The view from the Schilthorn is amazing as is the cable car ride up and back. Eating in the revolving restaurant while enjoying the view is enjoyable.

Again, if you can leave the official tour on the way down, you might get off in Murren (beautiful views and lovely small town to explore), then walk to Gimmelwald (or take the cable car if rushed for time). The walk takes 30 – 40 minutes. Then explore Gimmelwald a bit, ride the cable car to Stechelberg, and take the bus to Lauterbrunnen and train to Interlaken.

The Zermatt/Matterhorn day will be a long one; it is impressive to see the Matterhorn, but if it’s cloudy, you might have a long drive (train ride) without seeing it. I don’t know if you can wait until you’re there to decide, but if you can, you might check the weather to see if it’s likely to be cloudy or sunny before driving that distance.

Having several days in a region improves the odds of getting to see the impressive mountain views, so doing 2 or 3 of the outdoor options for the Bernese Oberland region gives you more chances to enjoy it’s beauty.

All the best,

Raymond

Thanks for the advice. We can choose to not ride back after each tour and explore on our own. We would just have to plan and pay for our transportation if we did that, which is not a problem. Maybe we will book the Matterhorn tour but switch to something else if we see the weather is bad. That is a very long day so want to be sure its worth it.

I keep seeing posts that you must go to Lauterbrunnen when in Switzerland. We want to plan another 3-4 nights at the beginning of our trip somewhere else in Switzerland. Maybe even 2 places. Any advice on this? We are not museum people. We love food, people watching and culture.

So basically your 4th option is cooking lesson, spa or bike. To me you go to Switzerland for the scenery. I'd probably skip the cooking lesson as I've been to a couple of similar events and was underwhelmed. I might go for the spa but I've got 20+ years on you. Assuming decent weather I think the bike ride is your best choice.

For your extra days, I think you'd love Lucerne, [with a hotel AND balcony overlooking the Chapel Bridge and lake.] It's a friendly, walkable town, with easy train access to other Swiss cities. It's so easy to get to/from Lucerne and the Zurich airport, a dependable one-hour train ride.
Enjoy this wonderful country!

Lauterbrunnen and the valley are spectacular, and from there it is convenient to travel to either side of the valley for day hikes higher in the Alps. The rail system and cable cars make it really easy to get to some great hikes on short notice. On good weather days, it is worth staying up there to enjoy the views and walk a bit.

The train from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen is also very scenic, and Wengen is fun to explore as well or take a cable car to Mannlichen.

Even if it’s cloudy with some rain, you can have some beautiful views in the Lauterbrunnen – Wengen – Murren area, but it’s also good to be there for at least one sunny blue sky day to enjoy the grandeur of the Alps.

On cloudy rainy days, there are several options. Here’s a link to a discussion of these:

If you book the Matterhorn day, and the weather is bad, Bern makes a good day trip, and it has covered arcade walkways.

If you want to explore other areas, then Lucerne is a good choice (as others have noted).

You could also do a day trip to Bern: interesting fountains and clock towers, covered arcades, lots of people watching and some good restaurants. It’s a short trip from there to Interlaken or Zurich.

The smaller city of Thun is across the lake from Interlaken and has an interesting city center along the river with nice cafes/restaurants as well and a pleasant walk along the lake. It has two castles as well.

For a different region: Murten and Avenches are a convenient day trip from Zurich/Interlaken or you could stay one night there. There is more French spoken here; Murten has a fascinating wall around the old city which you can walk in a few hours. There are several nice restaurants and plenty of people watching. The nearby lake attracts lots of visitors in the summer, not sure about how many folks will be there in April. Avenches has Roman ruins. You could also visit Neuchatel while in the region.

Another option is Lausanne/Montruex, also in the French speaking part; it’s more wine country, with a beautiful lake and walks along the shore; there is a nearby chocolate tour and Gruyere. Lausanne has a nice food market; I got some Gruyere cheese there.

You might find that a 3 or 4 day rail pass is worth it for the days not covered by your official tour; just check a few fares based on your plans, then compare to the rail pass price.

Download the phone app to use when you’re there; the system is very efficient and easy to use.
