My son is planning a trip to Germany and Switzerland after graduation with a couple of friends. Going on the cheap, staying at hostels. I see where some sites are saying to buy a new sims card? or pocket wifi? Or to use USIMS app to get internet in switzerland and other countries. What would this group recommend?

Esims are the way to go IMO.

I agree with Tom, eSims work great and are low cost.
We use the Airalo App. Lots of YT videos on Apps for eSims.
