sightseeing cruise in Stockholm

We are heading to Stockholm on 9/3. We'd like to take a sightseeing cruise but there are so many different companies and versions offered. We also plan on using the ferries while there to get between different islands. Is it redundant or unnecessary to do the sightseeing cruise in addition? If not can anyone recommend a certain company or length of tour that they have enjoyed. Thanks so much.

It depends. Stockholm is situated on Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea. I think the most popular sightseeing cruise is the short one that goes under the various bridges and through the lock between the Baltic and the lake. This one would mostly give you city views from the water.

There are also archipelago tours. These would overlap a bit with some of the ferries but it depends on what ferries you plan to take and what islands you plan to visit. For example, if you are using the ferries to get to the close in islands (e.g., Vaxholm, Fjäderholmen) then there would be overlap with the shorter archipelago tours.. The longer tours would take you further away from the city.

I don’t have a recommendation for you regarding sightseeing tours. I took one the first time I visited Stockholm back in the 90s but mostly used the ferries when I lived in Stockholm and on return visits. I think the sightseeing tours are mainly operated by Stromma.

Waxholmsbolaget operates the ferries.
