Day tris from Stockholm

We are looking for a couple of day trips from Stockholm. We are considering Sigtuna and Skokloster Castle or Mariefred and Gripsholm Castle but are open to suggestions. Which of the 2 would be easiest trip from Stockholm and the most interesting as far as the town, castle etc? Thx, JimS.

I haven't been to any of the places you mentioned, so I can't comment on them.

Do you already have Drottningholm on your itinerary? I'm not sure if it counts as a day trip, but it is a worthwhile excursion.

I also took a boat ride to Fjäderholmarna. It's a pleasant boat ride and a delightful island to spend a couple of hours.

And I took the train to Uppsala. If you like the idea of visiting a university town, you'll really enjoy it. In addition to the campus, theres a beautiful cathedral, and the research garden of Carl Linnaeus, "the father of modern taxonomy."

Since you wanted a specific recommendation: Bålsta.

Choose Mariefred with Gripsholm Castle, which is a real castle in a nice setting, and you really feel it. It is one of the most important castles in Scandinavia. I think this could be the right choice for you. Sigtuna is overrated. RS thinks so too (I'm pretty sure that's what he wrote) and Skokloster has no preserved interiors if memory serves. Going to the MG area instead means that you have the opportunity to visit lovely Taxinge Slottscafé/Castle cafe, with a vast pastry selection "the largest in Northern Europe", just across the bay. "Never fewer than 65 varieties". This old mansion (1810) has a beach and a tranquil park. This is where renowned filmmaker Ingmar Bergman recorded the exteriors for his masterpiece Cries and Whispers (1973).
