Suprised by Prices of Moderate Hotels in Barcelona Mid-June

I'm starting to look for hotels/apartments for our time in Barcelona (about a week starting June 19th) and the prices are way higher than I expected!

Is there something going on with the pricing or the time period that I'm missing?

I checked the RS festivals/events (see below) - there does seem to be "things" going on around that time, but I guess I had assumed Barcelona wouldn't be too busy yet and therefore less expensive than Paris, but the prices I'm seeing are higher.

June 21–23: Spanish Grand Prix, Barcelona

June 23–24: Nit de Sant Joan/Hogueras de San Juan (Festival of St. John the Baptist), primarily in Alicante, Valencia, and across Catalunya (bonfires and fireworks on June 23, closures in Catalunya and Valencia on June 24)

In addition to any events, it just seems that post-Covid, folks are booking lodging 8-9 months out. So the moderated- priced lodging is the first to fill up. I just think that this is happening all over Europe.
Good luck

I believe you are correct on that Pat. We were in Barcelona last July. We stayed in Hotel Lleo which we can recommend. A moderate price…but I booked it in the 8-9 mth prior time to our stay. I don’t know what is available or reasonably priced 5 mnth timeframe. I just know from experience…one needs to book early. I hope you find something. A wonderful city to experience!

Barcelona is suffering from high demand, with prices high just about any time of the year, especially in June and the high season (if there is such a thing as the high season anymore). Pretty much the same with Amsterdam, Venice, London,....

Hello melt

what price range are you hoping for? What are you looking for?

I am going to be in Barcelona for the first time next October for four nights.

I booked a room through booking.com the very end of November. And a week or so ago, I checked prices again to see if I could get a better deal and I was "shocked" to see that prices had greatly increased.

The room that I had booked the end of November was now over $100 more. I posted about this and am going to see if I can find my discussion.

Personal perspective. Social economic and political opinions witheld. .

Last January, I was booking three nights in Seville at my favorite hotel in March for two. This January, i can’t find any more than two adjoining nights at the same hotel for February (lower season) for only one person solo at almost twice the price without the breakfast previously included last year.

That’s the last time I’m sharing my favorite accommodations with you people.

bostonphil7 - thanks for that link! Maybe it is exchange rates! Everyone has such just insights and experiences, I'm always learning stuff (reserve a bunch of places and then worry about which to keep!)

pat - your theory also seems correct, since I'm also traveling again for the first time since 2019!

all2alb - looks like a good place. I think my error is starting with RS and other guidebook recommendations...I should probably find something and then, as others have suggested (in bostonphil7's post) keep checking the places.

thenosbigs - as you said! recommend and regret. ;)

Bill Sinclair - all true. I am privileged to even be flying across the Atlantic ocean and really did need to be reminded that I'm complaining about 1st world problems.

Ok, so the Boss is in Barcelona for his world tour and has a concert on the 20th and 22nd. I guess what I'm experiencing is that the hotels are in short supply those three days and it happens to be in the middle of our time there so the price is high or there's no availability. I think maybe we go to Stiges, Figueres or Valencia for a few days?!

As Yogi Berra said: “No one goes to Barcelona in June anymore. It is too crowded.”

Maybe this is one of the reasons why there is little to book and the prices are high. If everyone books a bunch of rooms with no intention to keep them, then this artificial "demand" spikes the prices and there's less availability for other people.

I will usually book something early, then keep looking around for better deals. But once I find a better deal somewhere else, I release the reservation that I had previously made so other people can have access to it.

And one reason fewer places offer liberal cancellation policies. I am definitely in the camp that says do not reserve multiple rooms to "cull" later. Especially smaller hotels where a cancellation is felt, and missed opportunities to fill that room legitimately a problem.

nytraveler 23 and Paul

I do not know if "everyone" books a "bunch of rooms" .......

I believe that there are a good number of people who book more than one room eventually deciding which room to keep.

Hotels may be used to this practice as well as third party sites like booking.

And it may be why hotel prices go up for some hotel rooms or rooms become unavailable. That never crossed my mind until I read your posts.

But as time goes on and persons let go of their multiple rooms, rooms do become available and prices goes down. That may be why you can sometimes get a good deal closer to your travel dates.
