Barcelona hotel prices have shot way up

I decided to look at the reservation that I made a few months back for October 2024.

It is at The Hotel Continental. Barcelona When I booked my room for four nights, it was $700 PLUS and then with taxes, etc, the total came to to about $850..

Now the same hotel on booking is $917 and that is before the taxes, etc.

Shows that it "pays" (no pun intended) to book early and then if you find something less as time goes on, you can cancel and book another hotel, assuming that you booked with free cancellation.

But I also realize that I have made a mistake or two. I now know Barcelona better and did not understand what it meant to be on Las Ramblas. I thought that I was on Plaza Catalunya. Too late now.

I think that I got Hotel Continental Barcelona mixed up with the sister hotel that is Hotel Continental Palacete.

Well, well, well ...

I will keep my eye on the prize. There is still plenty of time.

Could some of that increase be due to the exchange rate? Anyway, last December I booked a room at HCC Montblanc. I just checked the rates for mid-October (after the Oct 12 weekend) and its around $136 for a double. The hotel was modern, the room spacious and the staff were very helpful. Unfortunately, half an hour after unpacking I went out, broke my leg and had to be shipped home on a stretcher. That's another story. The location is great, a 5-minute walk from Plaza Catalunya, very near the Palace of Catalan Music.

Thank you Chani

I am going to check out your suggestion.

You mentioned the October 12th weekend. I believe that is Christopher Columbus Day which is no longer a big holiday in the United States. Some communities still celebrate Columbus Day but celebrations are scaled down because Columbus has fallen out of favor.

Is it a big holiday in Barcelona?

And yes, you might be correct. The difference in my room rate might be due to the exchange rate.

Hi Chani

I booked a room at HCC Montblanc although I am still keeping my room at Hotel Continental for now.

Hotel Montblanc is about $200 less than Hotel Continental for the four days although you get a free buffet 24/7 at Hotel Continental including coffee and tea.

I drink a lot of coffee and I munch all day. I don't need to tell you that the cost of food can add up

You just broke your leg last month. How are you doing and I hope that you had very good insurance.

Bostonphil7, I made a similar mistake in Istanbul a few years ago. Instead of the lovely place with the rooftop bar, I ended up in a place where my daughter was the only guest not wearing a burka. We capitalized on the cultural experience.

Bostonphil7, hotel prices, like airfare, fluctuate widely depending on a variety of factors. That, coupled with the exchange rate as Chani mentioned, is why I never look at prices in dollars, but always the destination currency. If you pay ahead of time, you know exactly what you paid because you will see the US price on your credit card statement. However, if you have not, then what you pay will be determined by the exchange rate at that time.

So even though you have booked a room for what was $850 at the time of booking, that amount could be higher or lower depending on when you pay.

I tracked a flight just for grins this year. There is a post here someplace about it. The fare went up and down like a yoyo; right up until 2 weeks prior. I suspect hotels could do the same.
