Sevilla longer stay

For exploring Andalucía, that extends almost the entire width of southern Spain, a month in Sevilla is too long. It’s so much more than Sevilla, Córdoba, and Granada. There are only so many day trips within a couple hours that you can take. After that you’d need to consider if the time spent at a location merits the travel time it takes to get there.

Forget day trips, do southern Spain by staying in the other places you want to see.

Appreciate these ideas! We have always wanted to do a trip where we stay in one location and get to know a community and improve our language skills. If you have suggestions for places to stay, would love them.

One thing to consider is whether you want to be in a touristy location or one where few tourists visit. There’s no right or wrong answer; it’s personal preference. Sevilla, Cádiz, Córdoba, Granada, Ronda, Nerja, Málaga, and Jerez de la Frontera are often mentioned on the forum and are popular destinations.

On a recent trip we visited some of those, but tried to stay away from the popular destinations. Additional places we’ve stayed included Antequera, Úbeda, Jaén, Motril, Mojácar, and Almería. Other than Mojácar, there were very few English speaking tourists or locals.

To help decide where to stay, make a list of the places and sites you’d like to visit. From it you should get an idea of possible places to use as bases. On our recent trip we spent 3 weeks between Ronda to the west and Lorca to the east, and Málaga to the south and Úbeda to the north. Essentially, a fairly small area.

If you’re in one of the popular destinations many of the locals will speak to you in English so you’re less apt to practice Spanish as much as you’d like. Get away from the popular destinations and fewer people will speak English. Somewhere between the two is the balance you’re looking for.

I’m not suggesting you move around every few days, but maybe have a second base. Again, it’s all personal preference.

I think Sevilla would be a fantastic base for a month, with a few day and overnight trips. I absolutely understand your reasons for wanting to do that, rather than picking up and moving every few days. Stay in one place, get to know your local bar owners, your favorite market vendors, etc....this is in valuable and very different than the "two days in Cordoba, three days in Sevilla" track followed by some travelers.... You'll have a chance to get to know people and engage in conversations other than "where is the nearest laundromat..."

And when merited, you could spend two nights in a different location.

You can't cover all of Andalucia this way, but you sure could visit a good portion of it.

And if you base yourself out of the major tourist areas, you will not find so many locals speaking English, especially the older folks who did not have to learn it in school.

In general, Andalucia (outside of the main tourist hotels, restaurants and attractions) has fewer people fluent in English than you might find in other regions, such as Catalunya and Galicia, where just about every person under the age of 40 seems to speak English very well.... That has been my experience as someone who spends the better part of a month each year in Andalucia. During my time there, I very rarely speak in English.

There are areas of Sevilla that are off the beaten tourist track but still would be a good location for a month-long rental....and you would have plenty of opportunity to practice your Spanish. I'd r rather be there than in a tiny village, but that's just my opinion.

I know basing in one place isn’t for everyone but having done many a trip where we moved around (and loved it!) just up for a different experience for All the reasons noted above. Claude developed a great itinerary for us to use as a guideline and even built in three rounds of golf which was on our travel list. Hoping to find a good apartment soon!

I stayed at the Numa Seville Jondo apartments in the Barrio Santa Cruz/ east of the Cathedral in the city center.

Good location in the center and pretty decent amount of space, overall really liked it.

We stayed at Sevilla Plaza Suites, recommended in the RS guide book, for 5 nights last November. It worked well for us.

I think Sevilla would be great for a month, although I might break the trip into two bases.
