Luggage check in Madrid

My ultimate destination is to a Mission in Africa. So, I will have 2 checked bags that are supplies for the Mission. I will pass through Madrid several times (both the train stations and the airport) before flying on to the Mission. Is there somewhere that I can leave/store these extra bags? I’d rather not be hauling them around the whole time I’m in Spain! Shipping them directly to Africa is extremely expensive.

As far as I know there is still a left-luggage service inside Atocha Station. Look at the third floor plan here. #5 is the Consigna.

There are also left-luggage services elsewhere in the city. You can Google for information.

How long do you need to leave the bags? The storage lockers have a time limit and probably would not hold two large suitcase.

I don't know that they have lockers; they may, but it may just be a staffed luggage-checking service. That is done sometimes for security reasons. They may put the luggage through some sort of screening device. The disadvantage is that there may be lines to drop off and to pick up the luggage.

There are quite a lot of train stations in Europe that used to have luggage lockers but no longer have them, which is one reason for the existence of commercial luggage-storage services.

If you do some Googling you may be able to uncover some details.

Kathy,

How big are the lockers in Atocha Station? Can I get 2 suitcases in one?

There are three different sizes of lockers at Puerta de Atocha train station, small, medium and large.
You may need two large ones depending on the size of your luggage.

Look for 'Consigna' on the ground floor, where the tropical garden is located, it's near Burger King. My mom and I left one of our carry-on bags when we visited Toledo.

You may want to read the instructions I wrote about the lockers (save your ticket!) on this post: Luggage storage- Madrid

Have a wonderful trip!
