Day Trips from Valencia

We're going to be spending 2-1/2 weeks in Valencia, and I'm thinking we would like to take a couple of day trips. Nothing too far. Alicante is probably too far. I have a couple in mind, but I'd like to hear from other people who have done day trips from Valencia or visited places near Valencia. We like art, architecture, history, wandering around, seeing the sights. No bicycling. Looking for suggestions.

Ok so some daytrips within 2 hrs from Valencia? Yes there are a few I've been to that I can suggest, you have:

Peñíscola (1:30 hr by car) - cobbled streets and whitewashed houses, the old town of Peñíscola sits on a big rock that juts out into the sea. The town is dominated by a large Knights Templar castle that looks like something right out of the Crusades.

Sagunto aka Saguntum (30 min by car) - ancient settlement sacked by Hannibal Barca that led to the Second Punic War. Now an eclectic mix of Roman, Moorish, and Christian fortifications.

Cuenca (1:30 hr by AVE high speed train) - a unique medieval town hanging off the side of a cliff, UNESCO heritage site. The AVE line makes a stop in Cuenca's Fernando Zobel station, which is about 15 min from the centre of town.

For other ideas here is my trip report from the general area and the nearby "off the beaten path" Matarraña region in particular - https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/trip-reports/undiscovered-spain-mediterranean-roadtrip-2023

I wanted to know if you would consider going out of the city for a rice (paella, etc) lunch (??)
If you will have a car, I have two suggestions; without a car, I have one. Let me know fi your want the details, and if you want any restaurants recommendations within the city as well.

I am heading to Valencia for a week and have planned a trip to Manises, which is a "day trip" of sorts - about 20 minutes and 10 stops by metro, almost back to the Valencia airport.

My plans are to see all things ceramic/art, including a first stop at the tile-covered Manises Tourism Office, immediately across from the metro station.

The Manises Ceramics Museum

La Ceramica Valenciana - photos look like a beautiful museum collection inside!

I plan to follow the self-guided Ceramics Route:

Be aware of timing, as the tourism office and ceramics museum both close mid-afternoon (130pm - 4pm, per websites) and then re-open. La Ceramica Valenciana is only open on weekdays and closes at 2pm.

ekscrunchy, I don't think I would make a special trip just to try some rice dishes, but if I did, what did you have in mind? Also, what restaurant recommendations do you have?

For rice, just out of the city, in the hamlet of Meliana, I highly recommend CA PEPICO. You can get there by taxi for about 18 euro each way; there is a quick train ride from the Valencia Nord Station to a stop right near the restaurant. You have to book advance, when you select your rice dish; you order all your other dishes once you are seated. We loved it so much that it was one of the experiences we remember most fondly when we look back on our ten days in Valencia in late 2024. Like NAPICOL, the other renowned rice restaurant in Meliana (we also had an exquisite lunch there) CA PEPICO is open only for lunch except on Fridays.

(Rice is eaten during the day and most restaurants serving it at night would be strictly aimed at tourists. The exception to this is LLISA NEGRA, in the center, which is a more "elegant," (but not fancy) and beautiful restaurant which also does a wonderful job with rice. Service was phenomenal, even for Valencia where every restaurant had great service.

All of these restaurants cook the rice over vine shoots on an open wood fire.

We also loved CASA SALVADOR, south of the city, but you need a car to get there and lunch there would take up your afternoon, with the drive and the meal; it's right on a lagoon so lots of birds and boats..

This is the menu for CA PEPICO, and it's pretty typical of all restaurants focused on rice, so you can get an idea of how the meal is set up; rice dishes have a two person minimum and the listed prices is the price per person. CA PEPICO does not list prices on their menu but you can imagine 25 per person for rice (portions are very large)

In the city we loved LLISA NEGRA, and I'd also recommend taking taxi out to either NAZARET or EL CABANYAL, gentrifying fishermen's barrios with some very good restaurants; lovely to wander around, look at the architecture, get the feel of residential areas outside the center..,. The most famous restaurant in EL CABANYAL is CASA MONTANA which is great for traditional food; lively, packed, great atmosphere.... If you want to have a less frenetic scene at dinner, you could try the small LA SASTRERIA, worth a visit for the design alone.

Closer to the center, we had two excellent dinners at RAUSELL; I don't think they attract many tourists; traditional place with great service and very reasonable prices. Family owned and run now by a pair of brothers of the third generation; they may have an English menu to offer if you go, but not online; great for both meat and seafood:

I can link some photos and more info fi you like.

From Valencia, we drove to Denia for five nights.....lovely town, easy to walk around, endless sandy beach..many pedestrian streets...

Cuenca is also a good idea; we spent three nights there on the way to Valencia by train. (We rented the car once we left Valencia and dropped it at the airport before returning to the city for our last night)

We were just in Valencia for a week and went to Parque Natural de la Albufera (a little bit south of the city center) to sample some paella and take a sunset boat ride into the lagoon. We took the 25 bus down, which was pretty easy - though the ride back was rather crowded and we and many others had to stand. It was about 45-50 mins by transit. A taxi would be quicker. Our bus went to the little town of El Palmar https://www.visitvalencia.com/en/what-to-see-valencia/el-palmar and we at a Restaurant El Palmar. It was a lovely day and we sat outside and enjoyed our paella and a generous pitcher of sangria. The evening boat ride was very low key, and pretty - though our tour was in Spanish. Our daughter, who is studying in Valencia, translated for us. The guide gives background and history of the region. The sunset was really something - though our guide did turn us around a little too early so we kind of missed the real show. But, I'd still recommend it - just try and time your departure a bit closer to sunset if you can, and/or view the sunset from the pier after an earlier tour.
