I will be in Barcelona for a weekend and need recommendations on where to stay that is convenient for public transportation and within walking distance to the main sights. We typically like non-Western hotels so we can embrace more of the local culture. Any suggestions?

For what you are seeking, I would recommend Hesperia Ramblas. It is very nice, about a 2 minute walk to the metro/train, and in the center of anything you'd want to see in Barcelona. You can get info from them if you email hotel@hesperia-ramblas.com

We stayed at Hostal Campi. It's nicely located a few blocks from Placa Catalunya and about a block off the Ramblas. I'd stay there again next time.
The biggest caveat is about half their rooms are en suite and half are showers down the hall. We went with the latter because it's good for the budget and we don't mind going down the hall. If en suite is important to you, pay attention when you book.
