Lisbon Airport to Sintra

Hello Fellow Travelers,

My daughter and I will be taking our first trip to Portugal this Spring!

We will be flying into Lisbon and are planning to go directly to Sintra for the first couple of nights.
Since we will be in a jet-lag state, I'd like your opinion as to the best way to get to Sintra via public transportation.
I don't want to take a taxi from the airport as this would be the most expensive option!

Here are the options I've found and I'm considering:

  1. Take Metro (Red Line) to Oriente Station and take a train directly to Sintra.
  2. Take Aerobus (#1) from airport to Rossio Train Station, then a train to Sintra
  3. Take the Metro to Rossio or Restauradores, walk to Rossio Train Station and take train to Sintra.

Which of these options have you taken and recommend?

Thanks a bunch!

Priscilla

Option 1 is probably easiest. I did Option 3 in effect, except I stayed in Lisbon for a few nights near Rossio before taking the train out to Sintra from there. I'm not aware of the distance to walk from the metro stop at Oriente to the train station, though. I don't care for buses, which is why I didn't bother with an airport bus. Taking the metro from the airport to Rossio required one change.

Thanks Andrew!

Our original plan was to start our trip in Lisbon, however, since we fly home from there, we'll leave Lisbon till the end of our trip.

My husband and I did #2 a few years ago. We landed in Lisbon after an overnight flight from BOS (less than 6 hours so not a good night's sleep), took the bus to the train station and then the train to Sintra. Our B&B was an easy walk from the train station. The airport bus drops you off a long block or so from the train station and if I remember right we initially set off in the wrong direction but figured it out and corrected. As on all our European trips, I had purchased a SIM card with data at the airport - google maps is my friend everywhere in Europe. While we were in line at the train station to buy our tickets the next train to Sintra left so, while we waited for the next train, we had a snack at the coffee shop in the train station which had nice outdoor tables - I'm thinking it was a Starbucks but don't quite remember.

Priscilla, I considered doing the same thing (except I ended in Porto). I was going to go directly from the airport in Lisbon to Sintra and spend a few nights. I wound up doing the day trip plan, anyway. That probably worked out better anyway (even though I could have planned my day in Sintra better). There is a LOT to see in Lisbon and I had only four nights for Sintra and Lisbon. But a night in Sintra would probably have been fun. It's a super busy tourist town, as is usually the case, but quiet at night once they have mostly left.

Carol,
Thanks for your helpful reply!
I was wondering how far the bus stop is from the Rossio train station. On the map it doesn't look that far, but when one is exhausted and experiencing jet-lag, it can seem like a very L-O-N-G way, right?

I too refer to Google Maps on every one of my trips, it's an invaluable source!

FYI, you may already know this but you can also download the maps you'll need (at home or when you have access to Wi-Fi) and use google maps offline! ; )

Hi Andrew,

Did you mean to reply to my other post?

I posted a new question yesterday, and it looks like someone tried to post a reply, then changed their mind.

No, Priscilla - I think I have the right thread, just re-affirming my vote for option 1! :-)

Thanks Andrew!

I hope I get some replies to my other question. Any ideas?
