Area to stay in Lisbon

I'm looking for the opinion of those of you who have stayed in different areas of Lisbon (Baixa, Alfama, Barrio Alto, Mouraria,...).

What did each area had to offer that makes it more convenient/better than the others?
Any areas you would stay away from?
In essence, is there one area that is closer to the attractions or has more ambience or offers better transportation options or food selection is better or etc.?
Thanks in advance for your opinion.

I stayed in a hotel in the Rossio Square -- also known as King Pedro IV Square -- in the center of Lisbon. It was a fabulous location! Everything was conveniently located relatively close. However, my hotel was middling at best, though I cannot remember the name. I got the name out of Lonely Planet.

I’ve only been to Lisbon once and therefore only stayed in one area, for 6 nights, the bottom of the Alfama - by bottom I mean fairly close to the river, a little ways past the cathedral, not up high in the hills. For me this was the PERFECT area. Wonderful ambiance, very close to a lot of the recommended Fado restaurants and other fun places. Being closer to the river meant less hill walking to get places, for example we were pretty close to Praca Comercio. But we loved the easy option of heading uphill for the wonderful atmosphere. Almost every afternoon or night we walked to the kiosk at Porta del Sol for a drink and view.
I found Alfama the most atmospheric area so liked being there.

Hi Nestor,

My daughter and I stayed in the Baixa neighborhood, on Rua Augusta, a pedestrian only street lined with shops, and restaurants galore (although we only ate dinner here once) It was a convenient location near Praça do Comércio (TI here), the river, Rossio Metro, Cais do Sodré train station, and the Chiado neighborhood just up hill. Alfama and Mouraria neighborhoods are nearby too because that’s where we went on our walking tour which started at the Praça do Comercio.

I’ll share my Lisbon trip report which includes some restaurant recommendations and other useful information.

Please let us know where you ended up staying.

Enjoy your time in beautiful Portugal!
