What kind of collapsible walking sticks would fit in a Rick Steve’s’ carryon

I’m in my mid 70s and would like to take walking sticks on a Rick Steves Turkey tour. My Black Diamond sticks don’t fit in Rick’s rolling carryon. Do any of you have any suggestions? Thank you.

Im using LEK foldable walking/hiking poles from REI in my Rick Steves carry on bag. The collapsibe poles come in their own carry bag. any foldable/collapsible hiking pole should fit just fine.

Just be aware that not all walking sticks are allowed in carry on luggage.

This from the TSA:

Blunt-tipped walking sticks are allowed in carry-on or checked bags and must be screened like other property. Sharp-tipped walking sticks are not allowed carry-on items. Please note that even if an item is generally allowed, our officers make the final decision on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint.

Check with your airline to see if they allow walking sticks as carry-on items.

Poles that fold (like a zig-zag) get shorter than telescoping poles, and fit in a shorter bag. I’ve got both kinds, and only my folding poles will fit. As mentioned by others, though, whenever I bring trekking poles, I check my carry-on-sized bag. I don’t want to risk losing them to airport security, either in the U.S.A. or abroad.

I agree with Frank and Cyn. I don't take any chances on losing my trekking poles. I'd rather check the bag and not have to worry about it.

Thank you for your help. I think I would check a bag if I take Poles. We always go carry-on only so I probably won’t get to take poles. A good hiking shoe with grippy tread might have to suffice. Thanks for your time.

I have Leki poles that I broke down into 3 pieces each and they fit in my RS wheeled carryon. I did check the bag though.

If you really want trekking poles and want to be safe coming, you can always buy a pair once you get there. Look ahead and see what shops in the area you will be at have something like that. Then, when you are coming back, either check a bag or donate them to another traveler or a charity shop before you leave.

What I have done twice is check hiking poles in a lightweight duffle bag I bought on Amazon and carry on my luggage as usual. Then I am only risking losing my poles.

I have a small bag that I use to check my hiking poles. I am not going to risk checking my carry-on. You can wrap the poles in some clothing to keep them protected (clothing you could manage without or easily replace). You can use rubber bands to hold the clothing around the poles. Once at your destination, the bag for the poles can be put in your carry- on since it should be small and soft. I'm usually flying on miles with a free checked bag or two; if you have to pay to check, it might be cheaper to buy poles at your destination.

Beth, that's actually a really good idea! I never thought about doing something like that.
