Trying a new thing

I’m on my second RS bag, but even it’s some 20 years old. I got my first one 40 years ago on my first trip to Europe. It even went through getting wet in a tropical storm during our honeymoon in 1988.

I love the bag, but I know how I am - a scrambled eggs kind of re-packer. Starts off great, then… I recently saw a picture of a suitcase with either open packing cubes or organizers? I had an idea to get small cubby thingies from IKEA and see they could help me.

They worked! It’s like opening a drawer when I open my bag. Well, we’ll see if they last through the trip. ;) I’ll report back in July. :)

(Now trying to figure out how to add pics…)

You can't add pictures (at least not directly) - the forum does not support photos.

Best you can do is post the photos elsewhere, in a publicly viewable website, and put a link to them here. There are plenty of photo hosting websites will allow you to serve up some photos (but this one doesn't). For example...

Here's a linked photo

Some folks might be reluctant to click on a photo link if you don't have much history here.

baccuda, packing cubes are great. I've been using my old Eagle Creek cubes for years. Makes travel life so much easier. I hope it works for you.

You can get packing cubes at Walmart--for convenience. I use them and also zip lock plastic bags which I squeeze all the air out of.

We recently got a Solgaard 21 inch rolling hard side bag and a Hartmann 22 inch carry on.

After one 3 week trip, I am going back to my old Travel Pro ultra light carry on bags with swivel wheels.

I always love reading about different packing ideas! I don't think this would work for me, but can see how it would be great for some. I've developed a mishmash of cubes of different sizes, shapes and colors as well as mesh pencil bags (you know the type from grade school) of various sizes and colors. It helps to grab and pack quickly, knowing that electronic things go in the black pencil bag while shirts go in the purple smallish cube. Still, my packing ideas are constantly evolving so I'll admit I'm hoping others will chime in with what works for them.

Oh, and thank you for adding the links to the pictures. I'm a visual person so it helps to see your idea.

baccuda isn't using packing cubes, they are open top boxes (maybe cardboard?)
I don't see the advantage over packing cubes, but we all find what works for us.

An interesting idea. I like it. One question though. Did the items you place in the cubbies stay in place for the trip? I'm glad they worked for you. I have been using packing cubes for several years. I'm thinking I could use your idea to separate categories, clothes, souvenirs, toiletries, etc. I use a backpack that opens completely up on the long side. I might try cubbies for my next trip.
