Traveling with a wedding dress

Hello.

I’ve been a one bag traveler for a few years now and for my next international trip I’m facing a bit of a challenge.

My husband and I will be renewing our vows (eloping style) in Scotland in a few months and on purpose I bought the most lightweight, packable dress I could find. I know this is probably not the best time to do a one bag type of trip but now I’m wondering how in the world should I do this. Maybe checking my backpack and bring the dress as a carry on? Get a hard shell carry on and pack everything in there?

The dress is not a typical wedding dress with a train and a petticoats, it’s a regular ivory dress that if you dye it in any other color would look like an evening dress.

For my backpack with my regular travel clothes I’m planning on taking my EBags weekender Jr if that helps.

And to be honest, I have no idea how to proceed because I never go to destination weddings or cruises or any other out-of-town events where I would have the need to travel with a gown or dressier clothes.

Any ideas and suggestions would be appreciated.

Edit to add: thank you very much for your suggestions. My dress hasn’t even arrived yet but I’m already planning ahead about packing and stuff.
I think I’m leaning towards buying a hardshell carryon. I think I’ll be better that way.

I would do what you mentioned and check your backpack, then bring the dress on as a carry-on.

You could do as Mardee suggested or if you are staying at a hotel with laundry service send the dress out to be pressed or steam ironed upon arrival.

Keep in mind that if you just use a garment bag for the dress it will have to lay on top of other travelers luggage and will be subject to getting tossed around and if people want to access their overhead luggage you’ll get all kinds of hands on it. I’d definitely put it in a hard sided bag. We brought one in a garment bag from the west coast to Hawaii. It worked out but it’s stressful!

I would bring a hard sided carry on and pack everything critical in there. If you need to check a bag, make sure everything you need for the wedding, and everything that would be a real hassle to replace if it was lost, are in the carry on.

Watch a YouTube video on how to pack a wedding dress. Then contact the hotel and ask them for the name of a company that can steam it.

In case you’re thinking about a garment bag, just a note that the airlines are getting very picky aka following their own rules now. You’re only allowed two items total, including any fanny packs, etc. stuff. I wouldn’t want you to show up at the airport on this special trip & be disappointed because the number or size of items doesn’t fit their requirements.

I traveled successfully with a special handmade dress by folding a sheet around it, loosely rolling it, and putting it in a carry-on size duffle bag. It fit safely in an overhead bin, and arrived unscathed, no wrinkles. I considered and decided against a garment bag for the reasons stated above.

A few years ago we attended a birthday party in London where the stated attire was "Long Gown and Tails." My wife had not had a long gown since high school. We took one extra suitcase just to hold the long gown. A really great birthday party!!!!

My wife & I got married in Scotland (Edinburgh) in 2023. It was a long trip starting in Minneapolis-NYC-LHR-DUB-EDI-CDG. Lots of stops but only 1 connection. We each checked a bag that included our wedding wear. (Kilt w/all the accessories plus my wife's dress & all the "stuff") The one tight connection was at LHR & I was very worried. But it all worked out. We built the trip so that there was not any 1 hour connections. The one connection was 4 hours and then the plane was delayed a while.

So I would not be too worried if you build time in to compensate for late flights, etc. We did consider shipping a bag ahead with our wedding stuff. We worried about delays in customs and decided to just check the bags

Congratulations!

Our three aunts had a bridal and tux rental business on Kauai.

It was easy to view their selection and rent the any desired outfits.

Never a worry about packing. wrinkles, cleaning, or stains.

Check your destination for bridal rentals.

This could save effort, worries, confusion, and planning.
