My husband and I are traveling to the UK in May and France in September. I want to take a yoga mat to keep up my practice, but most of them still seem too bulky to "travel light", as we are only using carry ons. Any suggestions on mats or mat alternatives? Thanks!
Well, I can tell you what doesn't work for someone with old knees, lol!
I, too, wanted to continue my yoga practice last Fall when I spent about a month in France. I took a yoga towel (that I had previously gotten in Paris at Pylones, lol) that weighed about 8oz. It was just not enough padding for those HARD French hotel room floors. They are almost all hard surfaces and wow, just could not get comfortable in any kneeling, prone or supine position. Plus, since I'm a solo traveler the single rooms are sometimes pretty small and a couple of times there was not enough floor space for me to roll out a mat or, laughing, a towel.
I'm a light packer and made a conscious decision to "spend" weight on a compression cube for the yoga mat, a resistance band, sticky yoga socks and some balls I use for my feet. I would definitely take the sticky socks and the tools I use to keep my feet well and happy (MELT balls and a Naboso Neuro ball) again, but will not take the yoga towel. The jury is still out on whether I'd take a resistance band next time.
I'd done quite a bit of research on travel yoga mats and most seem to be in the 2# range, which for me is more than what all my shirts weigh! Are you on the Travel Fashion Girl FB page? Every now and then there is some discussion on there about travel yoga mats. I can try and find the posts there if you are a member.
I will be interested to know what you come up with and what works for you! I kind of decided after last time I would work out a mostly standing practice and then would do any supine poses on the bed.
How about a standing routine during vacation.
I have a folding travel mat that I use for domestic travel, but that would not work. I think only the towels that Pam mentioned would be an option for packing, but you may need extra cushion for using them (and hotels and even rental are often let's say parsimonious with the extra towels--and of course the space issue mentioned--sometimes I cannot even turn around in the shower, much less get down on the floor, lol).
You could just buy some cheap mats and leave them behind (though I often check bags on the way home, when I am less concerned about a delay).
Yoga socks are a great idea--I admit I don't have too many qualms about getting on the floor.
This post has made me realize I need one too, I like this one: https://www.treklightgear.com/products/painted-moth-yoga-towel?variant=39948883165227&country=US¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&utm_source=google&utm_medium=pmax-ss-s_obj&utm_campaign=all-products&tw_source=google&tw_adid=&tw_campaign=21408013640&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0dHRovrwiwMVR2BHAR1MuDE_EAQYAiABEgIoLPD_BwE
on sale and can double as a lower back pillow on the plane
@valadelphia...that looks like a nice towel.
Here is the one that is similar to the one I got. I don't see where it lists any specs on it though. I also am not sure how much I paid, but it has been several years. Probably not more than 25E.

The design, however, are these cute yoga poses that are on the swim bag.

Decathlon is a French sporting equipment store with branches all over the UK and France.
Their prices are very keen, and they have many on their website with some mats from £3 to around £29. Maybe you could get one this side and leave it at a charity shop when you leave. Maybe look at https://www.decathlon.co.uk/sports/yoga/yoga-mats
for the UK sold products.
Will you be in France or the UK first?
