Travel Pro questoin

I am looking at travel pro two wheel options for carry on......the max lite 5 international carry on and the max lite 5 22" carry on (both 2 wheel versions). The 22" is slightly larger and both are the same price right now. I was wondering if I get the 22" would I get in trouble on any overseas flights in your experiences and would be forced to check it.

Thanks for any info

In today’s world and as has been recommended on numerous recent posts, it’s best to check with the specific airlines you will be using for their international flight carryon baggage specifications and their inter European flight limitations if you’re using connections, as these might not be the same. There is not a standard for all airlines.

Hi there, you might find this thread useful, some went into a lot of detail about the differences between carriers. One thing to watch out for is connecting flight on another airline - United isn't bothered about weight of carryon that I recall, but connect to Lufthansa, they will weigh both your personal item AND carryon, max is 8 KG. https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/packing/what-size-carry-on-for-both-domestic-international-flights

As noted already, will vary by airline and ( possibly) by what class ticket you have.

This question does not have a singular answer, such as 'what is 2+2'.

From the Travelpro website the dimensions for the "International' size are
Overall Dimensions (includes wheels and carry handles)::

H: 21.75 in. W: 15.75 in. D: 7.75 in.

Case Dimensions: H: 20 in. W: 15 in. D: 7.75 in.

The 22" dimensions are:
Overall (includes wheels and carry handles):
H: 23 in. W: 14.5 in. D:9 in.
Case Dimensions: H: 21 in. W: 14 in. D: 9 in.

I suspect the "22 inch" bag will run afoul of many European airlines limits. US carriers probably less likely a problem, but would not be surprised if you did run into an 'issue' with a gate agent.

And keep in mind the measurements travel pro is giving you are not correct. They do not include wheels and handles, but the airline does when it measures

Thanks all. Gonna go with the smaller one I think. Also there is not that much volume lost anyway.

We also bought the international version a few years ago. No regrets, so far.

I've been carrying TravelPro 22" swivel carry on's for years. Only once or twice did a budget airline try to get me to check it.

Most of the larger airlines pay little attention to bags as long as you can lift them overhead. All the airliners in use accept a 22" bag.

Carol, under "Features and Dimensions" they say that those dimension include wheels and handles. And yet, this is an "international" bag and they give the width as 15.75" and then they say,

This Carry-on bag has been sizer bin tested to accommodate
overhead bin space on most major US airlines.

But most US airline sizer bins only accept 14" width, so I don't know that I trust anything they say. I think that selling travel bags is a license to lie. I'm an engineer with an advanced degree in marketing. Sometimes (?) I feel that their spec are made up by marketing, not provided by engineering (if engineering even exists in their organization).

A luggage manufacturer can claim a bag is "carry on compliant" as long as it fits the carry on dimensions of one airline.

Whether or not you will be allowed to take it on board depends on the airline, the gate agent, and in what class you are flying.

The closest thing to a universal size is 21.5 x 14 x 9 weiging 8kg. This will meet the requirements of:

American
Austrian
British
Delta
EasyJet
Eurowings
Iberian
Lufthansa
Swiss
Turkish
United
Ukraine International
Virgin

Air France and KLM and ITA the bag is technically a little less than 1/4" too wide.

Then there is the issue of the size and weight of the personal item. An entirely different list. 15.7 x 11.8 x 5.9 will work on the highlighted airlines above.

Don't you mean 21.7 x 14 x 9? Who uses 21.5" as the height?

Most European airlines seem to use 55cm (21.65"); British Air and Iberia use 56cm (22.05"). They all seem to measure to the nearest whole number of cm (55 & 56). 21.5" is 54.6cm. Domestic airlines measure to the nearest whole number of inches (21 & 22).

I'd say use 21.7"x14"x9" (55x35x23cm) to fit most airlines. Air France, KLM, and ITA allow 35cm for width, which is actually 13.78", but call it 14" on their websites. All those airlines also allow 25cm (9.84") for thickness. 13.78" x 9.84" is 135.6 sq. in. of allowable cross section, so a 14" x 9" bag (x-sect=126 sq. in.) should fit in the sizer if it is flexible.

Of course Lee is correct. So there is a bag size for most, but not all airlines. But you still gotta double check with the airline you are flying.

And yup. It's smaller than it needs to be for many airlines but who wants to buy 6 different bags?
