Train from Geneva to Lausanne and back

We plan on taking the train to Lausanne from the Geneva Airport. Is it very chaotic buying tickets on a weekday morning? Should we buy our rail tickets in advance?

Thanks for any advice,
Kate

It is easy I would not worry about buying anything in advance, very short ride, as I remember only 20 minutes or so. J

I would download the sbb app and buy that way. Then lines and ticket machines won’t be an issue. The Swiss ticket machines have never liked my credit cards.

Kkrodros,
How much are you moving around Switzerland? Perhaps one of the Swiss Travel Passes or Half- Fare cards might be right for you. Remember that on the SBB app, it is assumed that you have at least the hall fare card, so the price is actually double the figure you see .
Safe travels!

Carrie's advice is great: get the SBB app and buy your tickets there. Will you be in Lausanne for several days? Going elsewhere in Switzerland? As Pat mentioned, other pass options or even day-saver tickets may be worth looking at. Lausanne itself has a City Pass.

HI Everyone,

Thank you for these great suggestions. We will definitely download the app. We will be in Lausanne for three full days. Then we'll take the train back to the Geneva Airport where we are meeting our group for trekking around the Alps.

Thank you!

Hi Kate,

The SBB app shows travel time from Geneva Airport to Lausanne to be 45 to 52 minutes depending on which train you take. I have taken this trip many times, both directions. I enjoy the views of Lake Geneva on the trip.

Happy Travels!
