Timbuk2 Medium messenger as personal item

Given how strict airlines are now, has anyone had an issue on Lufthansa with using a Timbuk2 medium messenger as their personal item? It's technically 10 cm deeper than they allow, but the height and width are ok. I'd rather know now and adjust accordingly. Thanks.

2 inches is not a minimal difference to allowed size for personal item. It must fit under seat in front. As to how strict, it may be spot checked or depend on the fullness of flight,,or the mood of the person at the counter that day.
Keep in kind, the soft side will also expand as you fill it making it even more too big. I saw a guy with one that was stuffed and it was as rolly polly as a duffle bag. Given his suit, he may have been flying first class with more baggage allowance, but I wouldn't have wanted to make foot room for it.
Your call.

Will you have it full? If it will have a lot of stuff in it, then I wouldn’t risk it. If you keep it lightly packed then it should squish into a sizer.
Most airlines don’t measure personal items as long as they seem reasonable and fit under the seat. Lufthansa May be different, but on any airline If it is bulging out then a flight attendant could notice and make you measure/move it.

It would only be an issue potentially on the way back, since I am checking my carry on suitcase. I suppose I can bring a foldable bag for my personal item on the way back and the Timbuk2 would be my carry on.

Having used a Medium Messenger (2010-era) daily for number of years, my general sense is that it'd be too large to be workable if it's anywhere near capacity. A Small Messenger (2013-era) was my personal item for a couple of flights and it worked out well.

Nikky, even the small is technically 1 1/2" too deep for Lufthansa. I suppose I can wear my Trtl pillow and headphones and cram it in the sizer if needed.
