The Value of “Lessons Learned” notes from packing

I’m leaving soon for another trip to Spain’s Andalusia region. Besides packing, I was looking in my iPad notes for my “To Do before an international trip”list. I saw this list, and wow, it is so valuable to not only have the comments from a previous trip, but the reasons why. Hoping this idea helps someone else, too!

Lessons Learned - Feb. Spain Trip

Those perfect bulkhead seats in Economy Comfort for the international leg of the flight that I booked early? I hope someone was able to enjoy them as we sat fogged in at our Spokane airport. Our new seats were middle ones together, and we arrived in Spain. Sometimes that’s all that matters. : )

Bring the Sherpani tote. Having it really helped me sleep on the plane - laying on top of plane tray & pillow on top of it to sleep. Also, it was very important for keeping my medicine and iPad with me when my backpack was stowed under the bus on some routes.

For Amsterdam-to-Malaga flight, they stopped everyone in line about halfway through and made them check their bag. I had moved my iPad, chargers, paper tickets for events & medicine to the Sherpani, just in case. It was a lesson to not just bring my crossbody purse as my personal item. One guy was throwing a major ruckus at being forced to check his carry on bag!

Be kind to yourself. When the running water was unexpectedly off for a day in our apartment in Estepona, we went to a nice hotel for one night. Why be miserable? Just restart the next day and enjoy the time there.

Bring the pj pants for lounging in apartments. Also, to be warmer sleeping some evenings.

Bring the long-sleeve t-shirt. I added that last-minute before we left since the forecast was cooler. I slept in it when it was colder during Cadiz’s stormy night. During the day, it layered well with a 32 degree shirt.

Knowing some Spanish - in Malaga, Estepona & Cadiz, there were times that we needed Spanish for communication. Luckily, several Italian words are similar to help catch the meaning. I had to ask a few questions during the Carnaval at Cadiz. Both times, a young group had to call a teenager over to understand some English words. We used Google translate a few times to pull up words, such as “pizza to go”.

We always bring our two Fold & Go ripstop nylon bags that squish into its own tiny ball in a pocket. We used those a lot for grocery shopping.

I brought my tiny 3-zip LeSportsac crossbody purse with me to wear inside my coat during the crowded Cadiz Carnival. I also found it very handy anytime it was raining to use it instead of my regular Baggallini crossbody. My phone, apartment key, some Euros, extra TP & two single use Purells were all I needed. I used it more than my Baggalini purse.

We both prefer bar soap to shower gel, so I brought a half Italian bar in a Ziploc bag. All of the locations have been shower gel, only.

Did I need my Keen sandals? No, but it was nice to wear them in Estepona.

Did I bring the right clothes?

I brought two 32 degree micro-thin long-sleeves scoop neck shirts. These were my workhorses. I wore the black and plum ones together with a lightweight necklace, one at a time, or the black one layered when needed. They wash & dry quickly.

I brought (including my plane outfit) three 3/4 shirts. I could have eliminated the lightest weight one that I only wore in Estepona. I threw in a long-sleeve t-shirt last-minute with the colder forecast, and I was happy to have it. I wore it in Malaga & Cadiz.

I brought (including my plane outfit) a pair of thicker pants & a pair of leggings. I used them constantly and was fine with just two pair.

Four pairs of socks, five underwear and three bras. Turquoise Columbia hip length raincoat.

If either of us really wanted a puffy vest or jacket or even a sweater, there were plenty available at the local Saturday market at Estepona which also had lots of clothing shops, we could have shopped at Cadiz.

Jean, thanks for sharing. I, too update my spreadsheet after each trip, but don't have a lot of comments there. I think I'll start doing this. About the water being turned off. I love your solution. I always tell myself there is one bad day in every trip. So, when things like this happen I just say, "This must be my bad day. Glad to have it over with." But now I'll add, "Be kind to myself."

Jean, I do believe that my Lessons Learned notes are even longer than yours. And whenever I fail to explain in my notes WHY I have written, for example, "Don't pack the flowered shirt," and I ignore my own advice and pack it anyway, then I find out (the hard way) WHY.

Definitely valuable!
I keep a running list of packing notes on my phone. Things I could have used, things that didn't work etc.
I have yet to go on a trip where I have nothing to add.

I also make similar notes at the top of my master packing list and keep the past 4-5 trip notes on there in case they cover similar situations in the future. I also remind myself what I added to or subtracted from the master packing list so I know why the list has what it has. For example, my last trip the charging cables and wall adapters I took did not have enough oomph for my devices, so I replaced them with higher quality ones and updated the packing list to specifically say take the good ones. I just glanced through my notes again and they are kind of funny, especially the one that says "just take the Benefiber every day" LOL. And a stern reminder why the TRTL neck pillow ended up at the Goodwill (last minute pre-trip purchase was a dud).

Jean, I do something very similar to this as well. Often, on my flight home, I'll open up Google Keep on my phone and start writing a packing recap with notes. It has helped me so much with my packing. In the packing recap, I also document which carry on and personal item I brought on the trip. I love packing topics!

Great idea. I just went back and made notes on my packing list from my trip last week. It was a one week trip to Portland, OR but I was doing a little practicing for our 5 week trip in April.

What I want to know is, what kind of 71-year-old experienced traveler has to write herself a note that says "TRY ON TRAVEL CLOTHES! No, really, do not skip doing this!"

Nancys8, LOL! Well, I can relate because I brought a pair of jeans once and didn’t realize that perfectly fitting jeans don’t fit perfect with a money belt under them! ; )

Did you go shopping during your trip, or just wear everything else more than expected?

CL, I always pack my sense of humor, too. It gets used as often as my minimal amount of clothes!

Good topic Jean. Packing posts are always the best!
I keep a running commentary on my phone of which clothes worked good, which were a waste of suitcase space hoping to improve packing for the next trip. Only problem is I forget to check my updated packing list. Packed the same awful blouse two trips and it still hangs in the closet. I really need to do a Goodwill closet clean-out!
A small sewing kit has come in handy a couple times.

It's funny - I saw this topic subject, and thought, "oh I hope this is a Jean thread !" It's always such a pleasure to read what you write -and packing threads are my jam !

Sadly I have nothing interesting to contribute. But I am happily lurking and learning !

Sherry, I am going to have to check out Google Keep now - hadn't heard of it !

Another Google Keep user here. I have a "note" for each trip. For a trip to Switzerland, I copy the previous Swiss note, and edit it to be the new Swiss trip note. I list what I bring:

  1. In my pants
  2. In my carrryon backpack
  3. In my big backpack.

I also enter:

  1. what the bags weighed when departing, and when arriving home.
  2. starting cash (USD, Euros, SWF, etc...) in my wallet, money belt, and passport folder.
  3. any ATM withdrawals and the exchange rate
  4. the number to call if each credit card is lost.

Yeah, cellphone chargers are important. As mentioned, make sure what you bring is 3.0 amp, I bring a few, and a couple of long cords for reaching across the bed. I used to bring a large charging battery, but now just bring a small one in my daily backpack. I use U.S. chargers so I bring 2 pin plug adapters for whatever country. And I bring a small 3 outlet adapter plug because sometimes there are not many outlets in the hotel room.

Then I record restaurant names we liked best.
And most trips, I record each daily expense, food, hotel, etc...

Jean, nope --- no shopping, never shopping. I just (for two examples) didn't wear my favorite cashmere cardigan in public ( it had somehow become full of holes since the previous trip) and I bought a needle and thread so I could sew tucks into the hugely stretched-out neckline of a favorite flowered jersey shirt.

I need no note to "future self" about trying on all warm layers together after a late winter camping trip in Utah when I discovered that my layers were all the same close-fitting size and couldn't be layered and still have buttons buttoned and zippers zipped. The memory of feeling both cold and stuffed like a sausage has stayed with me for the subsequent 17 years.

I update my list when I have returned from a trip too.

My upcoming trip will be the first time I need to do laundry in a laundromat. I will be trying out the unscented laundry detergent sheets before I go to make sure that it doesn't give me a rash. I have easily irritated/sensitive skin. And also to figure out how much of the sheet to use for handwashing in a sink.
I will also try out the shampoo/ conditioner bar before I leave to see if I like it. Differences in local water make a change in what happens to my hair too but I can't know that until I'm there.

Every year I get older, the more detailed my notes need to be. No matter how many trips I make, there is always something I forget, something that never made it out of the suitcase and then something that didn’t fit the actual weather.

"I will also try out the shampoo/ conditioner bar before I leave to see if I like it"

Susan....try the bars out for a couple of weeks before you travel. I used several a couple of times and then after a week or so realized my hair did not like them at all.

I have been laughing at some of the broadcasters for the Olympics. I sent Jean a YouTube video of Adam Rippon the figure skater who is doing commentating for NBC for the games who brought 3 huge suitcases to Milan. A friend of ours said Tara Lipinski had 11 suitcases!

And I now have a note to self on my packing list to UNFOLD my tee shirts before I pack them so I know absolutely if they are long or short sleeve. I wound up in France last Fall with 1 less long sleeve tee than I thought and 1 more short sleeve tee than I needed!

Sherry--I had not heard of Google Keep, so thank you! I just added it and started my list for our trip in a week.

I have never thought about lessons learned. Well, let me clarify, taking the time to note the lessons learned instead of trying to rely on my memory. This is a great idea!

Also make notes, or better yet a diagram, of how you tetrised the packing cubes in your suitcase.

And just because 2 shoes will fit in one shoe bag doesn't mean that is the best way to pack them. Easier to tetris if each shoe is in a separate shoebag. At least for those of us with big feet!
