That's what I get for packing early

Yesterday I checked the weather reports throughout London for our trip which begins this Saturday. Seemed like quite cool temperatures and lots of clouds so I packed accordingly. I just checked today and find lots of sunshine and in the 70s during the day everywhere but the Orkneys. Thinking of changing out some of my clothing. Would you pack capris for Scotland this time of the year?

We enjoyed a full week of good weather in Scotland ( and one day of rain) in May 2014 and I wore my capris a lot for hiking. Two years later we spent three weeks in England in May, and it was so cold when we arrived we went to an outdoor store in Whitbey and bought fleece jackets and gloves. The day we arrived in London (?one week later), the weather changed, and it was 22 degrees or close at midday the rest of our time there.

But your results may vary, as they say. Weather in the U.K. Is highly variable and you should be prepared for the full range.

I loved seeing this. I've been tracking the weather in Amsterdam and Scandinavia. I've noticed the brief 70's F peaks in the afternoon and that most of the days are otherwise coolish.

I've chosen my preferred 4 tops and outerwear for the trip, but I won't really finish packing until 2 days before I leave. No matter the weather, the 3 pants will be the same, but I have top alternatives if needed. Based on past experience, 4 tops are all I ever use, so adding more tops is not an option.

I spent 6 weeks in the UK, May 1 to June 12, 2016. Except for the first few days in Bath and the last week in London, the weather was challenging. The worst was in Kirkwall (Orkneys) and York. Wind, sideways rain, cold, you get the picture. No place was truly warm. Plan accordingly.

I have been to Scotland and London. The best travel tip I received was to bring a high quality, packable raincoat with a hood. I highly recommend the following: excellent raincoat with hood/packable, zip-up fleece vest or jacket, no blue jeans, day-hiking boots or hiking shoes, good socks like smartwools. You can then layer your clothing as needed. You can combine the vest with the raincoat over it for warmth. Get a large, loose fitting raincoat for layering underneath.
