This 66 year old body should not be seen in a swim suit. Can I use hotel pools in shorts and shirt? We'll be in Venice, Croatia, Slovenia and Austria in late August/early September. I think anything goes at the beach.
How to put this politely....ahh, let's just say I vividly recall seeing men of all shapes and conditions about pools in Europe that care nothing about what I think and all seemed to have a grand time. As for a suit...take one.
I read your previous posts and I can't tell if you are male or female. Based on my very limited recent experience at a spa in Bath and when I lived in Germany in the early 80's, I agree that anything goes. In some cases, like in saunas, nothing goes.
If you are self-conscious like I am at 71, you might consider swim shorts and a swim shirt or rashguard top. You can get them for men or for women from a number of online sources.
Lo is correct....I jumped to the conclusion the original poster is a male. If wrong, then Lo's advice seems good....but my knowledge base is almost nonexistent as to women and swimwear.
Many pools will not allow you to wear street clothes in the water. But you could, as Lo suggests, wear board shorts and a rash guard shirt if you want to cover up. They are made for swimming (and should provide sun protection as well).
Board shorts come in various lengths, and can be loose or skin-tight.

I'm very definitely female but my trim svelte body has been invaded by an old lady.
I'm going to defer to experts here (I've never paddled in a pool in Italy) but I believe I've read that swim caps might be mandatory at some of them?
It must be catching because I have the same ailment. I wear a rash guard and swim shorts because of my fair Irish skin. My husband's family in Croatia refer to me as the "mummy on the beach" and easy to find, even in a crowd. Anything goes which is really very pleasant because you can relax and just enjoy the water. Oh, and add in the water shoes and you can imagine the ribbing I take.
When I was tilting at this windmill a couple of years ago, I looked back at some pictures of my aunts in swimsuits in the 1920's and wished I could find something like that! I much admire my daughters who are larger than I am and totally at ease with the way they look in a swimsuit. But the center of the earth hasn't really started to work its magic on them yet.
I bought this rash guard top. And I have some black longish swim shorts from a different vendor. Since I pack light, I'm always concerned about weight and bulk, especially for something I might only wear once. My rash guard surprisingly weighs 9 oz and my shorts weigh 7 oz, so I have to ask myself, will I use them enough to carry that extra pound around for a month? You're supposed to wear a bikini top under the rash guard. I figure a bra is close enough. BTW, for the spa in Bath, I took an old suit and tossed it right there when I was done with it.
About the shorts, you might want to measure your rise. I have such a short rise that any bottoms of any kind that are low like that actually hit me at the waist or slightly below. If they are supposed to be at the waist, they often ride up high enough that they could be called "empire" pants. The right fit for those is more about comfort than looks.
If you are looking for a nice swimsuit that has a little more coverage I think that Lands End has a great selection. They have mix and match options and you can get a swim skirt or swim shorts if that makes you more comfortable. They also have swim dresses that are all in one and rash guards if you want more coverage up top. They also have plus sizes. Right now they are running their 30% off Friends and Family sale as well, through February 21.
